Excerpt from Dog Shows and Doggy People AS one who has always been a warm lover of dogs, taken a keen interest in dog shows ever since they were first started in this country, and been associated, in one way or another, with many of the most important shows held here, it has occurred to me that to men and women as the fanciers, breeders, and exhibitors amongst the fair sex are now very numerous and influential, and many of them quite up-to-date, even in the capacity of judges - with like tastes to my own, it may be useful and perhaps interesting as well to have a few particulars of the earlier shows, and, for the purpose of writing this book, I have therefore drawn on a long experience as an exhibitor, and perused many ancient catalogues and notes of bygone shows, collecting such details as I thought might be of interest about the Doggy People and dogs taking part in them, and giving slight sketches, accompanied in most cases with portraits, of some of the many friends and acquaintances I have met with during a long doggy career. So many names have presented themselves to me in this part of my subject, that I have had difficulty in making a selection without leaving out numbers who should be included, and, but for fear of making my book too large, I might have greatly extended the list; but I hope I have mentioned enough to serve as representatives of most classes of Doggy People. Whenever possible I have obtained reliable portraits of the people sketched, and of some of their dogs, which I think will have an additional attraction to those who do me the honour to read the book, the shortcomings of which are frankly acknowledged by the writer, who, however, has spared no pains to verify the facts and avoid exaggeration in the subjects dealt with. I may candidly say that a main inducement to write this book was the widespread popularity of my late book, which was, literally, All about Dogs, as I tried to comply with its title from first to last. In this connection I wish to gratefully recognise the very kind reception given to it by the Press, almost without exception. In this "briskly entertaining" (New York Times Book Review), "transporting and wholly original" (People Magazine) novel, one man banishes himself to a solitary life in the Arctic Circle, and is saved by good friends, a loyal dog, and a surprise visit that changes everything. In 1916, Sven Ormson leaves a restless life in Stockholm to seek adventure in Svalbard, an Arctic archipelago where darkness reigns four months of the year and he might witness the splendor of the Northern Lights one night and be attacked by a polar bear the next. But his time as a miner ends when an avalanche nearly kills him, leaving him disfigured, and Sven flees even further, to an uninhabited fjord. There, with the company of a loyal dog, he builds a hut and lives alone, testing himself against the elements. The teachings of a Finnish fur trapper, along with encouraging letters from his family and a Scottish geologist who befriended him in the mining camp, get him through his first winter. Years into his routine isolation, the arrival of an unlikely visitor salves his loneliness, sparking a chain of surprising events that will bring Sven into a family of fellow castoffs and determine the course of the rest of his life. Written with wry humor and in prose as breathtaking as the stark landscape it evokes, The Memoirs of Stockholm Sven is a testament to the strength of our human bonds, reminding us that even in the most inhospitable conditions on the planet, we are not beyond the reach of love. #1 Indie Next Pick Finalist for the Vermont Book Award Longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize

"[...]the actual fact, that, in the history of the world, dogs were never so highly thought of as they are now, nor were they ever so catered for, in a variety of ways, nor so generally popular. And when we consider the many varieties of the species, differing as much as is possible in the members of one family, and the appearance, habits, dispositions, uses and characteristics, just as various, it is not to be wondered at[...]".

Beloved Dog written by Maira Kalman and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-27 with Pets categories.

Maira Kalman, with wit and great sensitivity, reveals why dogs bring out the best in us Maira Kalman + Dogs = Bliss Dogs have lessons for us all. In Beloved Dog, renowned artist and author Maira Kalman illuminates our cherished companions as only she can. From the dogs lovingly illustrated in her acclaimed children’s books to the real-life pets who inspire her still, Kalman’s Beloved Dog is joyful, beautifully illustrated, and, as always, deeply philosophical. Here is Max Stravinsky, the dog poet of Oh-La-La (Max in Love)-fame, and her own Irish Wheaton Pete (almost named Einstein, until he revealed himself to be “clearly no Einstein”), who also made an appearance in the delightful What Pete Ate: From A to Z. And of course, there is Boganch, Kalman’s in-laws’ “big black slobbering Hungarian Beast.” And that’s just the beginning. With humor and intelligence, Kalman gives voice to the dogs she adores, noting that they are constant reminders that life reveals the best of itself when we live fully in the moment and extend unconditional love. “And it is very true,” she writes, “that the most tender, complicated, most generous part of our being blossoms without any effort, when it comes to the love of a dog.”
