This book isn't anything you have to memorize. As Catherine Ostrower, who teaches French at Wesleyan and was proofreading the book, wrote to the author: "THIS BOOK IS JUST SO MUCH FUN TO READ " It gives you the fascinating stories of English words that came from French, often words you would never have dreamt were French (like important, relay, stereotype, surrender, stranger, similar, and delicious). It tells you how these words evolved, how they arrived in English, and how they changed once in English. Think of these fascinating stories as a little treat for when you just feel like reading something interesting. Books in this Series by Saul H. Most English speakers are unaware that probably half their language comes from French, or indeed is French, recently transplanted. This book tells you the fascinating stories of English words that came from French, often words you would never have dreamt were French (like curtsy, mutton, very, surrender, important, grenade, pistol and dozen). It tells you how these words evolved, how they arrived in English, and how they changed once in English. This is not a book with useful facts to memorize (although you'll learn a lot of French and a lot about French while you read). However, it's interesting. It's fun to read. It will stretch your mind and introduce you to things you never imagined. Think of these fascinating stories as a little treat for yourself when you feel like reading something interesting. READ WHAT PROFESSORS AND INSTRUCTORS OF FRENCH HAVE WRITTEN about this book: I have to tell you, This Book is So Much Fun to Read! --- Catherine Ostrow, Lecturer, Wesleyan. I was discussing your book with my husband (who doesn't speak French), telling him about all the French he already speaks without knowing it. It is indeed a lot of fun to read. --- Prof. Brigitte Humbert, Middlebury. I found it, like the others, really useful. Nice work! The whole series is impressive. --- Prof. Jonathan Walsh, Wheaton. What a marvelous book! Bravo and keep up the good work! –- Prof. Ruth Koizim, Yale. I really like it! I am impressed with the amount of research you put into your books. ---- Prof. John Turvaville, U. of Tenn. As a professor of French, I found your book fascinating. I like to give students this type of background. --- Prof Richard Duran, Baylor U.. I read your book, a tonic in between undergrad lit papers! It's clearly written and well researched. I did enjoy it. --- Prof. Herta Rodina, Ohio U. AND ABOUT OTHER BOOKS IN THIS SERIES: I think your books are wonderful. You have made a fantastic contribution to the French language profession. --- Prof. Judy Baughin, Raymond Walters College. You have done a real service to learners of French...This is important work. --- Prof. John Romeiser, U. of Tenn.. I have to say your Key Words and Expressions is just the kind of book I would have liked to have had when I was teaching myself French oh-so-many years ago. --- Prof John Moran, NYU. If you really want to learn spoken French, you need this book (Key Words). You'll need other books as well, you'll need audio materials, and you'll need live language experience. But this book is a necessity. ---- reader reviewer, amazon. I love the Faux Amis, especially the relaxed, conversational presentation. ---- Professor Norman Shapiro, Wesleyan U. Your little books are great! ---- Prof. AG Fralin, Washington and Lee U. I absolutely *love* Faux Amis…It's so well done. --- Prof. Herta Rodina, Ohio U. I love your books! They are easy to navigate, and they are extremely useful to non-native French speakers. ---- Prof. John Turvaville, U. of Tenn.. Perhaps the most amazing thing about this book (Key Words) is that it took until 2007 for anyone to think of writing it! ---- reader reviewer amazon.com. The books are excellent.---- Prof. Luke Bouvier, U. Mass, Amherst I've been perusing Key Words for the past couple of days and it's great fun… What a great idea for a book! --- Prof. Herta Rodina, Ohio U. We are so used to hearing about all the French words that are found in English and about how purist the French are about their language, that we don't realize how many English words have migrated into French. You'll be astonished by how many English words are used in French. French is inundated with them! Swamped with them! Most are native English words, but surprisingly, some were originally French words which moved into English long ago, evolved a different meaning, and then moved back to French with the new meaning as anglicismes. English words aren't always taken into French with the same spelling and usage as they have in our language. For example, you'll encounter le week-end, which has gained a hyphen, and le warning which doesn't mean "the warning" in a general sense, but specifically means the emergency lights or flashers on a car. Some words are specific to certain sports, like l'uppercut or le football, or to other activities, such as playing bridge, while other words which are general in English have only limited meanings in French. An example is le slice, which only refers to golf and tennis, and not to a slice of melon, for instance. Some words are so well integrated into French that the average Frenchman wouldn't be aware that they are words of English origin. At the other extreme are words that that same Frenchman would recognize immediately as English words even though he uses them without reflection (much as we would say ravioli and pizza are Italian words, or taco and tamale are Mexican Spanish words). All these words will be marked as anglicisme or mot anglais in a French dictionary like Le Petit Robert, and the use of some of them would be frowned on in formal speech or writing, but many are very widely used in normal casual speech. You'll find it a fascinating book. READ WHAT PROFESSORS AND INSTRUCTORS OF FRENCH AND OTHERS HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT EARLIER BOOKS IN THIS SERIES: I think your books are wonderful. Do you want to learn French? This book walks you step by step through the basics you need to know in order to communicate in French, taking full advantage of your existing knowledge of English. - "How is English relevant?"The English language uses over 6,000 French words, words like "important", "table", "description", and thousands more. If your English is reasonably good, it's a safe bet that you already know about 3,000 French words. You don't know which ones, though. And it's not just vocabulary. French grammar is very similar to English's grammar. Learning French should be a breeze, but usually, it's not. This book validates your existing knowledge of French - a knowledge you didn't know you had - to help you Learn French, The Easy Way! All roads lead to Rome... but some are easier and faster! - How long does it take to go from London to Paris? Most people would say, "about 1 hour", because that's how long it takes if you take a direct flight out one of London's airports. Or if you're driving, it will take 6 hours on the shortest route. But on foot, without a map and traveling at random? It could take years and years, going through Moscow, LA, Uganda, Nicaragua, Brazil, Quebec... A lot of people wouldn't make it at all. Learning a language is a lot like that. You think you are on a straight path but chances are, that's not true. Most people end up lost along the way and never actually learn more than a few set phrases, in spite of years of language studies in school. Going from London to Paris can take about an hour, but only if you take a direct flight. Most students think, "Ok, I'm going to learn French", and in their mind, it is all about how hard they study and how smart and how talented they are. It seldom occurs to them how big of an issue what they are studying is. Mostly, they just blame themselves, "well, I guess I am just not good at languages." Of course, you have to study, and some people have an easier time than others, but: Are you on a direct flight from London to Paris, or are you on foot and lost in the middle of some jungle with a lousy map and a compass that doesn't work properly? You could spend years studying French without ever learning to communicate in French. Case in point, the average English speaker knows thousands of French words... and yet the average English speaker sure can't speak French. Studying at random isn't going to help much. As long as you are missing the keys fundamentals of the French language, you will get no closer to speaking French. This book is designed to help you navigate through the fundamentals of the French language, step by step, in plain English. Buy this book and you will Learn French, The Easy Way!
