In reconstructing the birth and development of the notion of ‘unconscious’, historians of ideas have heavily relied on the Freudian concept of Unbewussten, retroactively projecting the psychoanalytic unconscious over a constellation of diverse cultural experiences taking place in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries between France and Germany. Archaeology of the Unconscious aims to challenge this perspective by adopting an unusual and thought-provoking viewpoint as the one offered by the Italian case from the 1770s to the immediate aftermath of WWI, when Italo Svevo’s La coscienza di Zeno provides Italy with the first example of a ‘psychoanalytic novel’. Italy’s vibrant culture of the long nineteenth century, characterised by the sedimentation, circulation, intersection, and synergy of different cultural, philosophical, and literary traditions, proves itself to be a privileged object of inquiry for an archaeological study of the unconscious; a study whose object is not the alleged ‘origin’ of a pre-made theoretical construct, but rather the stratifications by which that specific construct was assembled. In line with Michel Foucault’s Archéologie du savoir (1969), this volume will analyze the formation and the circulation, across different authors and texts, of a network of ideas and discourses on interconnected themes, including dreams, memory, recollection, desire, imagination, fantasy, madness, creativity, inspiration, magnetism, and somnambulism. Alongside questioning pre-given narratives of the ‘history of the unconscious’, this book will employ the Italian ‘difference’ as a powerful perspective from whence to address the undeveloped potentialities of the pre-Freudian unconscious, beyond uniquely psychoanalytical viewpoints.

Der Vampir fungiert seit der Aufklärung selbst als Reflexionsfigur unterschiedlicher Wissenskulturen und ist derart für die Fragestellung des kulturellen Transfers doppelt relevant. The Author in Criticism:Italo Calvino’s Authorial Image in Italy, the United States, and the United Kingdom explores the cultural and historic patterns and differences in the critical readings of Italian author Italo Calvino’s works in the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Italy. It considers the external factors that contribute to create recognizable patterns in the readings of Calvino’s texts in different contexts. This volume therefore covers, most notably, matters of genre (science fiction, postmodernism), cultural perceptions and conventions, the (re)current image of the author in different media, academic schools, -curricula and -canons, biographical information (such as gender and background), and translation and the language in which the author speaks (or fails to speak) to us. It traces the influence of these aspects in the academic discourse on Calvino. The Author in Criticism also analyzes Calvino’s various professional roles as writer, editor, essayist, journalist, private correspondent, and public, cosmopolitan intellectual, reappraising their often little acknowledged importance for academic criticism. An important underlying idea is that the preconceived image that every critic has of Calvino before even opening one of his books is often solidified and repeated even in the most refined and complex critical analyses. While the undisputed heyday of folk horror was Britain in the 1960s and 1970s, the genre has not only a rich cinematic and literary prehistory, but directors and novelists around the world have also been reinventing folk horror for the contemporary moment. Battaglia fatta di scelte, prima fra tutte quella di impadronirsi dei segreti delle erbe medicinali. Il suo talento e una serie di fortunate coincidenze la condurranno a corte, a occuparsi di una regina che soffre di stitichezza. Veniamo quindi deliziati dalle descrizioni dei segreti erboristici dell'epoca, e nello stesso tempo accompagniamo Catherine che, con ammirevole ostinazione, resiste a tutto e a tutti in una corte dove la bellezza, da valore assoluto, passa incredibilmente, grazie a lei, in secondo piano per far posto, nei salotti intellettuali, a interrogativi filosofici sulle virtù della bruttezza. Ma non aspettiamoci nulla di edificante da questo formidabile romanzo. La brillantezza della scrittura è sempre venata di ironia. Su tutto domina un disincanto che spesso strappa una risata a denti stretti. Non ci sono buoni e cattivi, ci sono solo esseri umani con le loro miserie e, se si è fortunati, le loro virtù. E una protagonista indimenticabile: mostruosa, certo, ma non più dei mostri con cui deve lottare.

La traduzione del saggio di Fredric Jameson su Kim Stanley Robinson vuole ulteriormente sottolineare l’interesse (intellettuale e civico) verso l’utopia. Ampio spazio è dedicato a tradizioni nazionali di lingue diverse: questo numero presenta interventi sulla SF statunitense, francese e tedesca. Nel volume sono ospitate recensioni che guardano sia agli interessi presenti, sia a recuperi del passato e di una memoria storica di cui il genere ha senz’altro bisogno. Salgari è stato uno degli autori di maggior successo tra Otto e Novecento, eppure sulla sua vicenda rimangono molte zone d'ombra, incastonate tra i luoghi comuni e lo stereotipo del genio sregolato. Questa biografia - condotta su materiale di prima mano e accompagnata da una bibliografia definitiva - ne ricostruisce in modo preciso la vicenda umana e professionale, sgombrando finalmente il campo da miti consolidati. Non raccoglieva nei porti notizie per le proprie avventure: lettore accanito, lavorava soprattutto in biblioteca. Non è stato sfruttato ingenuamente: era consapevole - anzi, insoddisfatto! - del proprio successo. Grazie al lavoro di Bonomi e Gallo possiamo rivivere la sua formazione; scoprirne l'iniziazione e l'arduo percorso tra giornalismo, teatro e narrativa; comprenderne i rapporti con gli editori, le discussioni, le polemiche e infine la grande affermazione; inquadrarne criticamente la figura, tra Scapigliatura e Positivismo. Appassionante come uno dei romanzi del grande maestro, questo profilo accurato e rigoroso ricostruisce una volta per tutte la storia del padre del Corsaro Nero, gettando una luce nuova anche sul gesto estremo del suicidio.
