Allegories of Time and Space explores efforts by leading photographers, artists, architects, and commercial designers to re-envision Japanese cultural identity during the turbulent years between the Asia Pacific War and the bursting of the economic bubble in the 1990s. This search for a cultural home was a matter of broad public concern, and each of the artists under consideration engaged a wide audience through mass media. The artists under study had in common the necessity to establish distance from their immediate surroundings temporally or geographically in order to gain some perspective on Japan's rapidly changing society. They shared what Jonathan Reynolds calls an allegorical vision, a capacity to make time and space malleable, to see the present in the past and to find an irreducible cultural center at Japan's geographical periphery. The book commences with an examination of the work of Hamaya Hiroshi. A Tokyo native, Hamaya began to photograph the isolated "snow country" of northeastern Japan in the midst of the war. His empathetic images of village life expressed an aching nostalgia for the rural past widely shared by urban Japanese. Following a similar strategy in his search for authentic Japan was the photographer Tōmatsu Shōmei. Although Tōmatsu originally traveled to Okinawa Prefecture in 1969 to document the destructive impact of U.S. military bases in the region in his characteristically edgy style, he came to believe that Okinawa was still in some sense more truly Japanese than the Japanese main islands. The self-styled iconoclast artist Okamoto Tarō emphatically rejected the delicacy and refinement conventionally associated with Japanese art in favor of the hyper-modern qualities of the dynamic and brutal aesthetics that he saw expressed on the ceramics of the prehistoric Jōmon period. One who quickly recognized the potential in Okamoto's embrace of Japan's ancient past was the architect Tange Kenzō. As a point of comparison, Reynolds looks at the portrayal of the ancient Shintō shrine complex at Ise in a volume produced in collaboration with the photographer Watanabe Yoshio. Reynolds shows how this landmark book contributed significantly to a transformation in the meaning of Ise Shrine by suppressing the shrine's status as an ultranationalist symbol and re-presenting the shrine architecture as design consistent with rigorous modernist aesthetics. In the 1970s and 1980s, there circulated widely through advertising posters of the designer Ishioka Eiko, the ephemeral "nomadic" architecture of Itō Toyo'o, TV documentaries, and other media, a fantasy that imagined Tokyo's young female office workers as urban nomads. These cosmopolitan dreams may seem untethered from their Japanese cultural context, but Reynolds reveals that there were threads linking the urban nomad with earlier efforts to situate contemporary Japanese cultural identity in time and space. In its fresh and nuanced re-reading of the multiplicities of Japanese tradition during a tumultuous and transformative period, Allegories of Time and Space offers a compelling argument that the work of these artists enhanced efforts to redefine tradition in contemporary terms and, by doing so, promoted a future that would be both modern and uniquely Japanese.

This investigation of time and space is motivated by gaps in our current understanding: by the lack of definitions, by our failure to appreciate the nature of these entities, by our inability to pin down their properties. The author's approach is based on two key ideas: The first idea is to seek the geo-historical origins of time and space concepts. A thorough investigation of a diversified archaeological corpus, allows him to draft coherent definitions; it furthermore gives clues as to whether time and space were discovered or invented. The second idea is to define the units before trying to define space and time. The results presented here are unexpected: Time and space were not discovered in nature, but they were invented; time is not a phenomenon and space has no materiality; they are only concepts. This runs contrary to the opinion of most scientific and the philosophical authorities, although one would seek in vain for a theoretical validation of the conventional position. This book will provide much food for thought for philosophers and scientists, as well as interested general readers.

In Allegories of the Anthropocene Elizabeth M. Entering the world of Grigory Gurevich’s artistic vision, one finds a horizon rich in hue, texture, media and mood. In multiplicity of style, variety of inventiveness, Gurevich’s oeuvre epitomizes twentieth century art as a whole. During his education at St. Peterburg’s prestigious Academy of Fine and Industrial Arts, Gurevich cultivated an aesthetic ideal, while receiving a practical education as well. This educational scaffold supported the creative and prolific fruition of his enormous talent and versatility. Mr. Gurevich’s range includes watercolor, acrylic, oil, sculpture, pencil drawing, mobils, ceramics, hand made books, photography, jewelry, interior and furniture design. His representational work reflects his classical training and precision, while the non-representational pieces suggest impressions of primary process and archetypal images of the unconscious. When Mr. Gurevich immigrated to the United States in the late 70’s, his fascination with pen and ink captured his imagination. Through printmaking, woodcuts, etchings, lithographs and engravings, a sophisticated skill emerged with boundless energy. In time came adjustment to a new country and new relationships, and with this integration, lush colors burst forth in still life, portraiture and photographs. The fluidity and transparency of his late watercolors reveal a new found spontaneity and clarity which hold their own brilliance in their strength and expressive power. In expressionistic tones Gurevich explores his emotional reactions to what he sees in the world in a personal and subjective way that gives his audience a window into the complexity of his ideas and intelligence. Two of Gurevich’s commissioned sculptures, permanently exhibited in New Jersey, reveal the range of his achievement. A bust installed at the New Jersey Institute of Technology is sculpted in the classic method of modeling and carving. The seven life size bronze figures, which comprise tableau entitled “Commuters”, stand in Newark’s Penn Station. Executed through the traditional sculpting and carving method in combination with modern construction and assemblage technique, they bear testimony to Gurevich’s full measure of technical, dramatic and aesthetic sensibility. Gurevich has been the recipient of twenty awards for his outstanding artistic contributions. A gifted teacher of art and pantomime, he has conducted more then 2000 workshops for students in America. His background as an architect enriches his teaching method which stresses the relationship between solid forms in space, perspective and triangular composition., mood is set more in terms of arrangement than solely by the subject represented. Grigory Gurevich is a man of superb sensibility, amiability, conviction and gentility. He stands firmly planted in two worlds: one which has been born into a classical age, and the other, the artist’s realm, which sets him apart from any one period of time. Gurevich possesses the soul and integrity of character which newer rests on its laurels. The soul of the artist seeks continually to toil and produce in pursuit of unlimited possibility. Gendered Bodies introduces readers to women's visual art in contemporary China by examining how the visual process of gendering reshapes understandings of historiography, sexuality, pain, and space. When artists take the body as the subject of female experience and the medium of aesthetic experiment, they reveal a wealth of noncanonical approaches to art. The insertion of women's narratives into Chinese art history rewrites a historiography that has denied legitimacy to the woman artist. The gendering of sexuality reveals that the female body incites pleasure in women themselves, reversing the dynamic from woman as desired object to woman as desiring subject. The gendering of pain demonstrates that for those haunted by the sociopolitical past, the body can articulate traumatic memories and psychological torment. The gendering of space transforms the female body into an emblem of landscape devastation, remaps ruin aesthetics, and extends the politics of gender identity into cyberspace and virtual reality. The work presents a critical review of women's art in contemporary China in relation to art traditions, classical and contemporary. Inscribing the female body into art generates not only visual experimentation, but also interaction between local art/cultural production and global perception. While artists may seek inspiration and exhibition space abroad, they often reject the (Western) label "feminist artist."
