Allies In Crisis written by Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with Europe categories.

This book offers a cohesive picture of one of the consistent problems confronting NATO: the will and the capability of alliance members to act beyond the European theater. Sherwood's approach is chronological, focusing on a number of international crises since 1948 that she feels are representative of the out-of-area problem. She raises a number of points regarding the triangular relationship among the United States, the European allies, and the external countries involved, many of which were former colonies. She implies that the European allies often hesitated to get involved in such crises for fear of subjecting their own policies to intense scrutiny; and that the United States often chose to pursue policies that minimized its own involvement with the former colonies of its allies. Sherwood concludes that the European allies would claim that participating in such a conflict would have to come at the expense of the defense commitments at home. ISBN 0-300-04170-5: $25.00.

How America's vulnerable frontier allies—and American power—are being targeted by rival nations From the Baltic to the South China Sea, newly assertive authoritarian states sense an opportunity to resurrect old empires or build new ones at America's expense. Hoping that U.S. decline is real, nations such as Russia, Iran, and China are testing Washington's resolve by targeting vulnerable allies at the frontiers of American power. The Unquiet Frontier explains why the United States needs a new grand strategy that uses strong frontier alliance networks to raise the costs of military aggression in the new century. Jakub Grygiel and Wess Mitchell describe the aggressive methods rival nations are using to test U.S. power in strategically critical regions throughout the world. They show how rising and revisionist powers are putting pressure on our frontier allies—countries like Poland, Israel, and Taiwan—to gauge our leaders' commitment to upholding the U.S.-led global order. To cope with these dangerous dynamics, nervous U.S. allies are diversifying their national-security "menu cards" by beefing up their militaries or even aligning with their aggressors. Grygiel and Mitchell reveal how numerous would-be great powers use an arsenal of asymmetric techniques to probe and sift American strength across several regions simultaneously, and how rivals and allies alike are learning from America's management of increasingly interlinked global crises to hone effective strategies of their own. The Unquiet Frontier demonstrates why the United States must strengthen the international order that has provided greater benefits to the world than any in history.

Alliances between states are a major feature of the contemporary international system. As long as alliances have been in existence so have crises between allies. No other crisis, however, evoked such strong emotions and open disagreements as did the crisis between Australia, New Zealand and the USA - the ANZUS alliance. The crisis raised serious questions about international morality, the role of nuclear weapons and the best way of lessening the risks of a major conflict. It changed the perception of security interests in the Pacific and beyond, and threw into doubt the very existence of the postwar system of alliances. This book places the ANZUS crisis in the wider context of international alliance management in international affairs. The contributors are leading academics from each of the three countries involved. They offer fresh insights and a unique and valuable interpretation of the problem as seen from Australia, New Zealand and the USA.

Two Nato Allies At The Threshold Of War written by Parker T. Hart and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with History categories.

As ambassador to Turkey during the Cyprus crisis (1965–1968), Parker T. Hart provides an insider’s view of the management of that crisis in NATO and Greek-Turkish relations. Greece and most Greek Cypriots favoredenosis(union with Greece), but Turkey and the Turk Cypriots were prepared to go to war to prevent such an annexation. A massacre of Turk Cypriot villagers in November 1967 focused the anger of Turkey, which was prepared to send troops to Cyprus to equalize the preponderance of forces led by General George Grivas. The determined mediation of special presidential envoy Cyrus R. Vance prevented the initiation of all-out hostilities. Vance engineered a withdrawal of mainland Greek forces in excess of existing treaty levels in exchange for a standdown of Turkish forces. The Vance mission diffused the crisis and salvaged the integrity of NATO, and a Greek-Turkish agreement to sponsor and encourage intercommunal negotiations followed. Hart has relied on his own papers from the period, as well as on United Nations sources from the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library, and on the papers of the other key participants in the Crisis, Ambassador to Greece Phillips Talbot, Ambassador to Cyprus Taylor G. Belcher, and Cyrus Vance, to provide a rare play-by-play analysis of the crisis and its resolution.

Nato And The Crisis In The International Order written by Magnus Petersson and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-19 with History categories.

The main objectives of this book are to analyse the risks and dangers NATO faces in the current strategic environment and to discuss how the alliance can readjust to those challenges. How can NATO adapt to the dangerous combination of a revisionist Russia, a reluctant United States, and a Europe in crisis? NATO’s relevance and ability to survive have been challenged many times before, and it has not only survived but also has proven highly adaptable to change. This has been good for Western cohesion and for the consolidation of the liberal-democratic, rules-based world order. The main argument of this book is that NATO can overcome this latest set of challenges as well and retain its central role as a cornerstone of the European and transatlantic security order. NATO is different from other alliances because its members share not only interests but values as well, codified in the preamble of the North Atlantic Treaty as allied support for democracy, individual liberty, and the rule of law. The greatest enemy of the alliance is the forces that challenge the common norms and values of NATO’s member states, and – in a larger perspective – the liberal-democratic, rules-based world order, and Western civilisation itself. The book makes an original contribution to the existing literature on NATO and transatlantic relations and discusses the latest developments within NATO since the Trump administration took office. The book will be of much interest to students of NATO, geopolitics, security studies, and International Relations in general.

Parting Ways written by Stephen F. Szabo and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-09-30 with categories.

Germany and the United States entered the post-9/11 era as allies, but they will leave it as partners of convenience--or even possibly as rivals. The first comprehensive examination of the German-American relationship written since the invasion of Iraq, Parting Ways is indispensable for those seeking to chart the future course of the transatlantic alliance. In early 2003, it became apparent that many nations, including close allies of the United States, would not participate in the U.S.-led coalition against Iraq. Despite the high-profile tension between the United States and France, some of the most bitter opposition came from Germany, marking the end not only of the German-American "special relationship," but also of the broader transatlantic relationship's preeminence in Western strategic thought. Drawing on extensive research and personal interviews with decisionmakers and informed observers in both the United States and Germany, Stephen F. Szabo frames the clash between Gerhard Schrder and George W. Bush over U.S. policy in Iraq in the context of the larger changes shaping the relationship between the two countries. Szabo considers such longer-term factors as the decreasing strategic importance of the U.S.-German relationship for each nation in the post-cold war era, the emergence of a new German identity within Germany itself, and a U.S. foreign policy led by what is arguably the most ideological administration of the post-World War II era.
