Research on medieval and early modern travel literature has made great progress, which now allows us to take the next step and to analyze the correlations between the individual and space throughout time, which contributed essentially to identity formation in many different settings. The contributors to this volume engage with a variety of pre-modern texts, images, and other documents related to travel and the individual's self-orientation in foreign lands and make an effort to determine the concept of identity within a spatial framework often determined by the meeting of various cultures. Moreover, objects, images and words can also travel and connect people from different worlds through books. The volume thus brings together new scholarship focused on the interrelationship of travel, space, time, and individuality, which also includes, of course, women's movement through the larger world, whether in concrete terms or through proxy travel via readings. Travel here is also examined with respect to craftsmen's activities at various sites, artists' employment for many different projects all over Europe and elsewhere, and in terms of metaphysical experiences (catabasis).

Jan Huizinga and Roger Caillois have already taught us to realize how important games and play have been for pre-modern civilization. Recent research has begun to acknowledge the fundamental importance of these aspects in cultural, religious, philosophical, and literary terms. This volume expands on the traditional approach still very much focused on the materiality of game (toys, cards, dice, falcons, dolls, etc.) and acknowledges that game constituted also a form of coming to terms with human existence in an unstable and volatile world determined by universal randomness and fortune. Whether considering blessings or horse fighting, falconry or card games, playing with dice or dolls, we can gain a much deeper understanding of medieval and early modern society when we consider how people pursued pleasure and how they structured their leisure time. The contributions examine a wide gamut of approaches to pleasure, considering health issues, eroticism, tournaments, playing music, reading and listening, drinking alcohol, gambling and throwing dice. This large issue was also relevant, of course, in non-Christian societies, and constitutes a critical concern both for the past and the present because we are all homines ludentes.

Global goods were central to the material culture of eighteenth-century country houses. Across Europe, mahogany furniture, Chinese wallpapers and Indian textiles formed the backdrop to genteel practices of drinking sweetened coffee, tea and chocolate from Chinese porcelain. They tied these houses and their wealthy owners into global systems of supply and the processes of colonialism and empire. Global Goods and the Country House builds on these narratives, and then challenges them by decentring our perspective. It offers a comparative framework that explores the definition, ownership and meaning of global goods outside the usual context of European imperial powers. What were global goods and what did they mean for wealthy landowners in places at the ‘periphery’ of Europe (Sweden and Wallachia), in the British colonies of North America and the Caribbean, or in the extra-colonial context (Japan or Rajasthan)? By addressing these questions, this volume offers fresh insights into the multi-directional flow of goods and cultures that enmeshed the eighteenth-century world. And by placing these goods in their specific material context - from the English country house to the princely palaces of Rajasthan - we gain a better understanding of their use and meaning, and of their role in linking the global and the local.

Das Alltagsleben der sozialen Unterschichten im 19. Jahrhundert in Westfalen am Beispiel der sogenannten Landarmen ist Thema dieser Arbeit. Diese rechtlich heimatlosen Bedürftigen wurden auf Grundlage des preußischen Armenpflegegesetzes vom 31. Dezember 1842 von der jeweiligen Provinz als Arme des Landes unterstützt. Ausgangspunkt der mikrogeschichtlichen Studie waren die knapp 1000 erhaltenen Insassenakten des Landarmenhauses der Provinz Westfalen, das von 1844 bis 1891 in Benninghausen bei Lippstadt bestand. Diese Akten enthalten nicht nur behördliche Dokumente, sondern auch eine Vielzahl von biografischen Schriftstücken und Selbstzeugnissen der Landarmen. Durch diese einzigartigen, hier erstmals bearbeiteten Quellen konnte die alltägliche Lebensrealität von Unterschichtenangehörigen, die sonst in der historischen Überlieferung kaum greifbar ist, rekonstruiert und analysiert werden. Ausgehend vom Konzept eines sozialen Kräftefeldes, das nicht nur Herrschern, sondern auch Beherrschten Handlungs- und Gestaltungsmacht zugesteht, nimmt die Autorin die individuellen ebenso wie die kollektiven Handlungs- und Überlebensstrategien der Landarmen selbst in den Blick. Dies bezieht sich auf das Leben vor bzw. nach der Phase der Bedürftigkeit ebenso wie auf die Zeit, die Landarme in der Anstalt Benninghausen verbrachten. Im Zentrum der Studie stehen die Interaktionen zwischen den Landarmen und den sich formierenden Fürsorgebehörden, dem Anstaltspersonal, den Angehörigen, Freunden und Arbeitgebern sowie den privaten Verpflegern im Umkreis des Landarmenhauses Benninghausen.
