Transnational Horror Across Visual Media written by Dana Och and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-15 with Performing Arts categories.

This volume investigates the horror genre across national boundaries (including locations such as Africa, Turkey, and post-Soviet Russia) and different media forms, illustrating the ways that horror can be theorized through the circulation, reception, and production of transnational media texts. Perhaps more than any other genre, horror is characterized by its ability to be simultaneously aware of the local while able to permeate national boundaries, to function on both regional and international registers. The essays here explore political models and allegories, questions of cult or subcultural media and their distribution practices, the relationship between regional or cultural networks, and the legibility of international horror iconography across distinct media. The book underscores how a discussion of contemporary international horror is not only about genre but about how genre can inform theories of visual cultures and the increasing permeability of their borders.

Almost Normal written by Ann Kolsrud and has been published by CreateSpace this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-15 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Ann Kolsrud began her life in an insidious darkness under the roof of absent, neglectful parents, and struggles with her own inadequacies to make friends and be a part of society. After having to drop out of both high school and college due to mental illness, she stops moving forward until she begins a sexual relationship with her psychiatrist. Suddenly, she is living a life of riches as well as lies. Disgusted by the perversions she is forced (and paid) to endure, Ann seeks an escape and finds herself in a relationship with a woman whom she loves, though she is still dependent financially and emotionally upon the psychiatrist-lover, a relationship that drives her back to a world of insanity. Eventually, she leaves the psychiatrist and is helped by a new miracle drug, but after a small amount of success, the drug began to cause crippling arthritis and seizures. During this time she is told that her physical problems are all in her head. Taking it upon herself to make a change in medications, Ann slowly begins to die, not only from the physical but mental illnesses which continue to consume her. After reaching her lowest point -- which include debilitating medications and electric convulsive therapy, Ann is put onto new medication which finally allows her to surface from years of physical and mental suffering. She now is very much alive, working, cultivating friendships, and going back to college. She loves life and is full of energy and self-motivation. The downside to this new miracle drug, however, is that it has a side effect of causing heart problems that could potentially kill her at any moment. But Ann decides to live her life to the fullest, making her life rich by helping others with their lives. The hopeful lessons learned from her long struggle -- including the need to persevere in finding the right professional help and correct medications -- are instructive to anyone who suffers from mental illness.

Almost Anything written by Matt Shaw and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-20 with categories.

A collection of obscure, weird, offensive, gross and twisted short stories! Matt Shaw put a listing up in his store asking people to challenge him. The idea was, they paid a small fee and gave him a single word. He then had to write a story based upon that word. Why? He wanted to test his imagination and put his brain into overdrive, trying to think of stories based on obscure suggestions which he didn't control. Now some of the suggestions that came through were fairly "normal" and expected but, in those cases, he tried to do something unexpected. We really cannot go into more about that without ruining the surprise for some of the stories but, we are sure you will see what we mean when you get to reading. Essentially he took their word and twisted it. Don't worry, it's not cheating though. The word still figures in the story and is the basis of the story, he just looked at it in a different way is all. Before each story is the name of the person who brought the suggestion to him. He has then given a little introduction to each story and then that leads directly to the short itself. There are some sad stories, some disgusting ones, weird ones, funny ones... Basically this book is a mixed bag when it comes to its genre but, as a result, we think this book is probably the closest you can get to actually seeing his true, weird personality shining through. Or should that be, his personalities?

Nowhere Near Normal written by Traci Foust and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-05 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In the bestselling tradition of Augusten Burroughs, a compassionate, witty, and completely candid memoir that chronicles growing up with obsessive-compulsive disorder. When all the neighborhood kids were playing outdoors, seven-year-old Traci Foust was inside making sure the miniature Catholic saint statues on her windowsill always pointed north, scratching out bald patches on her scalp, and snapping her fingers after every utterance of the word God. As Traci grew older, her OCD blossomed to include panic attacks and bizarre behaviors, including a fear of the sun, an obsession with contracting eradicated diseases, and the idea that she could catch herself on fire just by thinking about it. While stints of therapy -- and lots of Nyquil -- sometimes helped, nothing alleviated the fact that her single mother and mid-life crisis father had no idea how to deal with her. Traci Foust shares her wacky and compelling journey with brutal honesty, from becoming a teenage runaway on the poetry slam beat in the hippie beach towns of Northern California to living at a family-owned nursing home, in a room with a seventy-five- year-old WWII Vet who kept mistaking her for a prostitute. In this funny, frenetic, and wonderfully dark-humored account of her struggles with a variety of psychological disorders, Traci ultimately concludes that there is nothing special about being “normal.”

The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown. These facts few psychologists will dispute, and their admitted truth must establish for all time the genuineness and dignity of the weirdly horrible tale as a literary form… As may naturally be expected of a form so closely connected with primal emotion, the horror-tale is as old as human thought and speech themselves. H. P. Lovecraft Horror intends to create an eerie and frightening atmosphere for the reader. Prevalent elements include ghosts, demons, vampires, werewolves, ghouls, the Devil, witches, monsters, dystopian and apocalyptic worlds, serial killers, cannibalism, psychopaths, cults, dark magic, Satanism, the macabre, gore, and torture.
