Flying a Phantom RF-4C reconnaissance jet amidst air combat--the remarkable technical details, the mission, the derring-do--and the 19 nonflying hours a day: All this told in a gripping series of vignettes by a former pilot of a U.S. Air Force photo reconnaissance jet stationed at an airbase in Udorn, Thailand, during the Vietnam conflict. Formation flying, night photo missions, confrontations with B-52s, the Officer's Club and shows at Udorn, AAA fire, SAM missiles, the "Hanoi Hilton," GIs being killed by their own side--all this and more form a work of literature quite unlike any other emerging from Southeast Asia.

"This thesis provides a biographical sketch of the life of Major Rudolf A. Anderson, Junior. Major Anderson was a U-2 pilot during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was shot down on 27 October 1962 while conducting a reconnaissance mission over Cuba. His was the lone combat death of the Crisis, and yet his story has not been told in more detail than a few paragraphs in the context of the larger story of the Cuban Missile Crisis. This thesis analyzes two questions: 'Who was Major Rudy Anderson and what impact did his missions have on the Cuban Missile Crisis?' In the process of reviewing these two questions the thesis explores Rudolf Anderson's childhood and early life. It analyzes the impact of Anderson's experiences on the Air Force officer he became and how, in turn, his personality shaped the Cuban Missile Crisis. The thesis also examines the development of strategic reconnaissance in the Cold War, focusing on the first dedicated reconnaissance aircraft, the Lockheed U-2 Dragon Lady. Finally, the thesis examines the impact of Major Anderson's missions and death on the Cuban Missile Crisis, and ultimately in the larger context of the Cold War"--Abstract.

The Supermarine Swift was rushed into service with the RAF during 1954 to become Britain's first second-generation jet fighter. In this role it was not deemed a success and has been burdened with a bad reputation since that time. It was eventually replaced by the famous Hawker Hunter that had been extensively delayed because of teething troubles. This book covers the development and operational history of a vital aircraft that is a part of aviation legend.

A NON-FICTION THRILLER BY THE AUTHOR OF “THE BOSTON STRANGLER” TWO YOUNG RADICALS ASSASSINATE A HIGH GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL. WERE THEY PATRIOTS OR MURDERERS? CAIRO, EGYPT: The car moved slowly through the baking heat and noise of the city and finally arrived at Lord Moyne’s residence. The car halted and the chauffeur hurried to open the door for the British Ambassador. On the other side, two figures leapt up and raced toward the car—both carrying revolvers. One youth reached the automobile, wrenched open the back door and fired three times at Lord Moyne. “Stop, murderers, stop!” Within seconds police had captured the two. “Who are you? Why have you done this?” One boy spoke. “We have nothing to say. We await the judgment of mankind.” “Brilliant and suspenseful. I can think of few reading experiences in the last year as compelling as The Deed.”—Los Angeles Times “SPELLBINDING SUSPENSE...a slice of history beautifully and accurately told. The Deed is by far the finest book Gerold Frank has ever written; it is easy to read but awfully, awfully hard to forget.”—Quentin Reynolds, Saturday Review “COMPELLING, IMPORTANT. Even if it were not true—and it is agonizingly true—it would be a genuine literary work. It is a book not to be forgotten.”—Herald Tribune “A NARRATIVE THAT WON’T LET YOU GO...moving and disturbing.”—Chicago Tribune “POWER AND POIGNANCY...gives life to a footnote in history. The opening prickles with suspense. The book reaches a climax of genuine pathos. Few, I predict, will fail to be moved by the closing pages of The Deed.”—John Barkham, Saturday Review Syndicate

Voodoo Warriors written by Nigel Walpole and has been published by Pen and Sword this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-03-28 with History categories.

The story of the supersonic fighter with “interesting insight into the period of the 1950s and early 1960s, the Cold War and of course the war in Vietnam” (Military Modelling). During the mid–1950s the United States Air Force was given its most powerful single-seat, two-engine fighter to date. The Voodoo would be deployed before the end of that decade in the tactical nuclear bomber and tactical reconnaissance roles worldwide, and in homeland defense with the two-seat, all-weather variant. In December 1957 it took the World Air Speed Record to Mach 1.6—over one and a half times faster than the sound barrier. This book looks at the evolution of the original design and its introduction into service. Chapters cover operations in Korea, Vietnam, the Cuban Crisis and in Europe during the Cold War years. Many first-hand accounts from pilots are included and the author’s own experiences with the aircraft are given with fascinating insight. The Voodoo was an elegant, mean-looking fighting machine that epitomized fast flying in the fifties and sixties. It continues to be a revered airplane. “Definitely a book that gives an in depth look at the Voodoo and the pilots who flew her.”—InScale.org
