Damit möchte ich den Leserinnen das Altwerden als etwas Natürliches und auch Heiteres vorstellen. Alt werden wird jede, keine kann’s verhindern, aber wir Alten können unser Leben genießen, wenn wir uns nur ein bisschen bemühen. In diesem Buch kommt auch mal Blödsinniges vor, das darf auch so sein. Optimismus liest sich umgekehrt – Sumsi mit Po – passt genau zu mir! Tscha, ein schöner Po ist doch auch nur ein Rektum mit Speck drum! Mein Lieblingstier ist die Zimtschnecke. Würde ich in einem Lebkuchenhaus leben, wäre ich nach 7 Stunden und 24 Minuten obdachlos. In meinem Leben habe ich immer versucht, das Ungute, was ja auch da war, auszuklinken. Manchmal ist mir das sogar gelungen und schon ging es mir wieder besser. Es ist doch so: Wenn ich schon auf die Nase falle, tut es weh, aber wenn ich aufstehe, freu’ ich mich riesig, dass ich wieder oben bin. Macht das die Altersweisheit? Ich freue mich einfach, dass es so ist, wie es ist, und sehe das Leben positiv. Das hilft mir immer wieder. Als Rentnerin kann ich morgens liegenbleiben, brauche nicht zu hetzen und dem Geld nachzujagen. Beim Lesen dieses Buchs darf gerne gelacht werden. Wer lacht, bleibt länger frisch. Altern ist nicht nur doof. Glaubt mir, es gibt immer wieder Schönes zu erleben. Gäbe es Aufsitz-Staubsauger, würden Männer sogar im Haushalt helfen wollen! In diesem Sinne, liebe Frauen, werdet alt mit Humor!

Brings to light unsuspectedly rich sources of humor in the works of prominent nineteenth-century women writers. Nineteenth-century German literature is seldom seen as rich in humor and irony, and women's writing from that period is perhaps even less likely to be seen as possessing those qualities. Yet since comedy is bound to societal norms, and humor and irony are recognized weapons of the weak against authority, what this innovative study reveals should not be surprising: women writers found much to laugh at in a bourgeois age when social constraints, particularlyon women, were tight. Helen Chambers analyzes prose fiction by leading female writers of the day who prominently employ humor and irony. Arguing that humor and irony involve cognitive and rational processes, she highlights the inadequacy of binary theories of gender that classify the female as emotional and the male as rational. Chambers focuses on nine women writers: Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Ida Hahn-Hahn, Ottilie Wildermuth, Helene Böhlau, Marie vonEbner-Eschenbach, Ada Christen, Clara Viebig, Isolde Kurz, and Ricarda Huch. She uncovers a rich seam of unsuspected or forgotten variety, identifies fresh avenues of approach, and suggests a range of works that merit a place onuniversity reading lists and attention in scholarly studies. A 2022 Best Comedy Book, Vulture A rousing call for liberals and progressives to pay attention to the emergence of right-wing comedy and the political power of humor. "Why do conservatives hate comedy? Why is there no right-wing Jon Stewart?" These sorts of questions launch a million tweets, a thousand op-eds, and more than a few scholarly analyses. That's Not Funny argues that it is both an intellectual and politically strategic mistake to assume that comedy has a liberal bias. Matt Sienkiewicz and Nick Marx take readers––particularly self-described liberals––on a tour of contemporary conservative comedy and the "right-wing comedy complex." In That's Not Funny, "complex" takes on an important double meaning. On the one hand, liberals have developed a social-psychological complex—it feels difficult, even dangerous, to acknowledge that their political opposition can produce comedy. At the same time, the right has been slowly building up a comedy-industrial complex, utilizing the humorous, irony-laden media strategies of liberals such as Jon Stewart, Samantha Bee, and John Oliver to garner audiences and supporters. Right-wing comedy has been hiding in plain sight, finding its way into mainstream conservative media through figures ranging from Fox News's Greg Gutfeld to libertarian podcasters like Joe Rogan. That's Not Funny taps interviews with conservative comedians and observations of them in action to guide readers through media history, text, and technique. You will find many of these comedians utterly appalling, some surprisingly funny, and others just plain weird. They are all, however, culturally and politically relevant—the American right is attempting to seize spaces of comedy and irony previously held firmly by the left.
