Although attitudes toward the aged and their care are inherent in any society, gerontology itself is a relatively recent field of study and practice. Gerontology and the Construction of Old Age applies the methods of discourse analysis and textual analysis to texts and documents in this newly evolved and eclectic fi eld. Green explores and identifies the literary methods and discursive regularities through which aging and the aged have been made into objects of study and treatment, and which together form a mode of knowledge production that will infl uence future texts in the field.Because such formats of representation limit rational diagnoses of problems and rational courses of ameliorative action, policy implications in the fi eld of gerontology are a major interest of this study. Another interest is methodological. Within the broader constructionist approach to social reality, Green takes the position of "constitutive realism": the notion that social reality is linguistically constructed, primarily in speech and writing. The book's two aims are to describe analytically the fi eld of gerontology. The field is important both for its growing academic presence and for its practical eff ects on discourse and policy concerning old age. It also hopes to help develop possibilities of inquiry associated with the linguistic, literary, and rhetorical turns of social science in recent years. Gerontology and the Construction of Old Age is a substantive investigation, at considerable theoretical depth, of gerontology itself, as well as a methodological treatise with broader implications for social science as it focuses upon the discourse of various professional fields.

Time, Cells, and Aging, 2nd Edition presents the mechanics of cell function and the relevant implications of the molecular-genetic view to the aging phenomena. This book explores the biology of the aging process. Comprised of 11 chapters, this edition starts with an overview of the causes and mechanisms underlying the gradual deterioration of structure and function characteristics of aging. This text then examines the two aspects of the behavior of man, including the reasoned conscious behavior and the greater dependence on reaction patterns predicted on the successful responses of the past. Other chapters explore the relationship between aging and mortality rate in animals, which is a result of an organism's deceasing ability to function optimally in carrying out his vital functions. The final chapter deals with the implementation of a research plan relevant to understanding the primary mechanisms of the aging process. This book is a valuable resource for gerontologists, biologists, and molecular biologists.

Feminist theorists have often argued that aesthetic surgeries and body makeovers dehumanize and disempower women patients, whose efforts at self-improvement lead to their objectification. Amending the Abject Body proposes that although objectification is an important element in this phenomenon, the explosive growth of "makeover culture" can be understood as a process of both abjection (ridding ourselves of the unwanted) and identification (joining the community of what Julia Kristeva calls "clean and proper bodies"). Drawing from the advertisement and advocacy of body makeovers on television, in aesthetic surgery trade books, and in the print and Web-based marketing of face lifts, tummy tucks, and Botox injections, Deborah Caslav Covino articulates the relationship among objectification, abjection, and identification, and offers a fuller understanding of contemporary beauty-desire.

Fathom the Unseen: The Role of Perception in Our Lives is a groundbreaking exploration of one of the most powerful forces shaping human behavior—perception. In this thought-provoking and comprehensive guide, you will embark on a journey to understand how perception influences every aspect of your life, from your sensory experiences to your emotional and cognitive processes, communication, social interactions, decision-making, and beyond. Why is perception so important? Perception is how we interpret the world around us. It dictates how we see others, how we communicate, and how we make decisions. Fathom the Unseen takes you deep into the intricacies of human perception, offering a detailed breakdown of the perceptual process, from the sensory input that enters our minds to the final perception output that shapes our reality. You will uncover the mysteries of how our five senses—sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch—contribute to our understanding of the world, and how our brain integrates and processes this sensory data. Delve into the psychological aspects of perception, examining how cognition, emotion, and motivation intertwine to create your unique perception of reality. Learn how perception can both align with and diverge from reality, leading to fascinating biases and distortions in how we see the world. The book also explores the critical role of perception in social contexts, shedding light on how we perceive others, how our perception influences our interactions, and how perception shapes our social and cultural norms. But it doesn't stop there. Fathom the Unseen goes beyond theory and delves into practical areas where perception plays a pivotal role—such as communication, aesthetics, marketing, and education. Discover how perception affects interpersonal communication, how it shapes the way we appreciate art and music, and how businesses use consumer perception to influence decision-making and brand identity. The book also explores how perception can be altered—whether by drugs, hallucinogens, alcohol, or medication—and the profound effects these changes can have on how we experience the world. As we age, our perception changes too, and this book offers valuable insights into how aging affects sensory experiences and how the elderly can cope with perception issues. For those interested in the science of perception, Fathom the Unseen covers the neuropsychological aspects of how the brain shapes our perceptions and discusses disorders that affect perception. It also introduces strategies for improving perception, from mindfulness techniques to specialized exercises designed to enhance how we see the world.Whether you're a student of psychology, a marketing professional, a teacher, or simply curious about the fascinating role of perception in human life, this book is a must-read. Fathom the Unseen will challenge your understanding of the world and encourage you to rethink how you interpret your experiences. Unlock the power of perception today and see the world in a whole new way.
