Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) is a relatively new building material. Nowadays, its use is progressively changing the method of concrete placement on building sites. However, the successful use of SCC requires a good understanding of the behavior of this material, which is vastly different from traditional concrete. For this purpose, a lot of research has been conducted on this area all over the world since 10 years. Intended for both practitioners and scientists, this book provides research results from the rheological behavior of fresh concrete to durability.

This volume represents the current knowledge on the effect of SCMs (slag, fly ash, silica fume, limestone powder, metakaolin, natural pozzolans, rice husk ash, special SCMs, ternary blends) on the properties of fresh and hardened concrete (e.g. early strength development, workability, shrinkage) and curing requirements. Other topics treated in the book are postblending vs preblending, implications of SCM variability, interaction between SCM and commonly used admixtures (e.g. superplasticizers, air entrainers).

Portland cement based concrete is the most versatile, durable and reliable building material. Unfortunately, the production of Portland cement is environmentally unfriendly. An interesting alternative is provided by alkali-activated geopolymer materials (AAGM). This book focuses on fly ash-based alkali-activated geopolymer concrete, its production and characteristic properties. The re-use of waste materials and industrial by-products, such as fly ash, is not only economically of interest but also helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The carbon footprint of these materials is much lower than that of concrete using ordinary Portland cement. They thus offer new sustainable solutions to the construction industry. Keywords: Geopolymers, Geopolymer Concrete, Alkali-activated Geopolymer Materials (AAGM), Portland Cement, Fly Ash-based Geopolymer Concrete, Reduction of Carbon Dioxide Emissions, Concrete Applications, Self-Compacting Concrete, High-strength Concrete, High-performance Concrete.

Concrete being a versatile construction material is not only the most utilized construction material globally, but also the second largest material used world over. Preparation of concrete exploits substantial quantities of natural resources. Thus to promote sustainability, agro industrial by-products have immense potential to prevent the excessive use of these natural resources to the point of depletion which can have detrimental effects. Moreover, with the increasing quantities of waste materials and industrial by-products, solid waste management is the prime concern in the world. Due to scarcity of land-filling space and its ever increasing cost, recycling and utilization of industrial by-products and waste materials has become an attractive proposition to disposal. Thus, such by-products can be used in construction, building materials and in other fields for reduction of environmental problems.Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a flowing concrete mixture that is able to consolidate under its own weight without undergoing any significant segregation. Extensive research has been carried out on the utility of agro industrial by-products in developing quality grade of SCC. The literature of different aspect of fly ash is quiet voluminous. This work investigates the workability and Strength characteristics of Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) prepared by partially replacing cement (ordinary Portland cement) with fly ash at different replacement levels (10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30%). The Guidelines of European Federation of National Associations Representing for Concrete (EFNARC) was followed for mix designing purpose. The experiments were carried out by adopting a water- powder ratio of 0.43. Workability of the fresh concrete is determined by using tests such as: slump flow, T50cm Slump, V-funnel, and L-Box. The strength properties such as compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength were tested at the age of 7 and 28days.Test results concluded that there is some increase in compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength after replacing the cement with certain percentage of fly ash. Hence, fly ash can be safely used in concrete for durability and strength purposes.
