The study presents data from a survey of public and academic library cafes and other food service operations. The report includes valuable and unique data on best-selling products, revenues and sources of revenues, expansion plans, catering revenues, salary costs, seating and decor and other facets of library cafe and food service operation. Data is broken out for academic and public libraries and also for library size defined by annual library budget and annual number of visitors to the library. The study helps planners answer questions such as: what are personnel costs for the typical cafe? How much revenue is accounted for by lunch traffic? Do cafes cater outside events and if so, how much do they earn?

In 1992 the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) surveyed administrators in member libraries regarding resource strategies of the previous three years. This paper summarizes revenue activities, adaptive tactics, and budgetary practices reported by 87 Canadian, U.S. private, and U.S. public university libraries and establishes a baseline for comparing these factors. The period from 1990 to 1992 has been a difficult one for ARL members, with the largest reductions in public support experienced by public university libraries. All respondents sought outside revenues to supplement their campus allocations. Virtually every responding library had experienced some form of internal restructuring, and three of every five had eliminated positions over the three-year survey period. Administrators valued flexibility in fund reallocation very highly, but few had much control over carrying unspent funds to the next year. While 88% of respondents expected the demand for services to grow, only 32% anticipated budget increases. Greater selectivity in activities and greater library sharing are likely to result from the economic realities. Three appendixes contain the survey summary results, the cover letter, and the questionnaire. (Contains 33 references.) (SLD)

The survey presents data from 50 public libraries, predominantly in the USA but also from Canada and Australia, about their library policies on sales to the public of excess and donated books, DVDSs, audiobooks and other forms of intellectual property. The study presents highly detailed data on revenues garnered, prices charged, venues sold through, sources of revenue, and many other factors in library materials sales. The study helps library planners to answer questions such as: how much do libraries earn by selling books online? What percentage of library book sales are accounted for by Friends of the Library and similar groups? What are total revenues through all sales of intellectual property by libraries and what is the trend in revenues? How many book donations do libraries receive each year? How many DVDs? How many of these do they keep for their own collection and how many do they manage to sell? What are the best-selling genres?

This book has been completely updated and revised to reflect the dynamic states of higher education and academic libraries. It presents a critical examination of major issues facing colleges and universities and the unique challenges that their libraries must come to grips with. Current practice is reviewed, but it is examined in the broader context of educational needs, scholarly communication, politics and economics, technology, and the nature of complex organizations."--Publisher's description.

Will American academic and research libraries be able to cope with the current technological, economic, and organizational issues that are bringing about rapid changes in information services or must fundamental changes first take place within these libraries? The twelve essays collected by Spyers-Duran and Mann attempt to answer this question. Section I: Problems, contains essays on the precarious financial environment of today's academic institutions; the erosion of funding levels in British university libraries; and realistic suggestions for financial planning in academic libraries. Section II: Changing Approaches, offers discussions on the importance of sharing scholarly resources; the discrepancy between library budgets and services offered; the growing role of the library in the information industry; a review of funding formulas in the academic library; and the changing needs, sources, and styles of financial planning. The final section of the book explores new opportunities for academic and research libraries, and includes information on current library automation; information-sharing among member libraries; external contracting for library services; and grantsmanship.
