Modern thermodynamics is a unique but still not a logically self-consistent field of knowledge. It has a proven universal applicability and significance but its actual potential is still latent. The development of the foundations of thermodynamics was in effect non-stop but absolutely no one has any idea about this. This book is the first of its kind that will motivate researchers to build up a logically consistent field of thermodynamics. It greatly appreciates the actual depth and potential of thermodynamics which might also be of interest to readers in history and philosophy of scientific research. The book presents the life stories of the protagonists in detail and allows readers to cast a look at the whole scene of the field by showcasing a significant number of their colleagues whose works have fittingly complemented their achievements. It also tries to trigger a detailed analysis of the reasons why the actual work in this extremely important field has in effect gone astray. It comprises five chapters and introduces three scientists in the first two chapters, which are specifically devoted to the Scandinavian achievements in macroscopic thermodynamics. These introductions are novel and call for a detailed reconsideration of the field. The third chapter acquaints the readers with their fourth colleague in Germany who was working on the proper link between the macroscopic thermodynamics, kinetics, and the atomistic representation of matter. The fourth chapter brings in their fifth colleague in the United States who could formally infer the famous formula S = k * ln(W), ingeniously guessed by Ludwig Boltzmann, and thus clarify the physical sense of the entropy notion. The last chapter summarizes the above-mentioned discourses.

Une affirmation de la scientificité des sciences humaines Dire ce que sont les sciences semble aller de soi pour nombre d’entre nous : on détermine assez spontanément ce qui en est proche et ce qui en est éloigné, ce qui est potentiellement redevable d’une approche scientifique ou ce qui ne peut prétendre s’apparenter à une telle approche. Pourtant, des problèmes et des questions surgissent dès lors qu’il s’agit de formaliser définitions et démarcations entre sciences et pseudo-sciences : qui a le pouvoir de reconnaître, désigner, définir et légitimer un propos ou une pratique comme faisant partie de l’espace légitime des sciences et, par conséquent, d’inclure ou d’exclure les impétrants (tels que les mythes, religions, parasciences, pseudo-sciences, etc.) ? Certes, si les critères de démarcation sont discutables, la nécessité de séparer le bon grain de l’ivraie demeure intangible. L’analyse empirique des vaticinations et arguties des irrationalistes permet de raffiner sans cesse ces critères. Ce livre en donne maints exemples. Les sciences humaines sont souvent l’objet d’intrusions spiritualistes, l’instrument d’une « déraison savante », le cheval de Troie des théories les plus insensées qu’une pléthore de mouvements et courants irrationalistes engendre à flots continus, en voulant faire main basse sur le « phénomène humain ». Elles doivent donc affirmer la prévalence de leurs méthodes tout aussi scientifiques que celles des sciences de la nature et leur indéfectible rationalité, afin de se défendre contre ce qui émane de ces cloaques de la pensée. Telle est l’ambition des neuf auteurs de diverses disciplines (anthropologie, épistémologie, mathématiques, philosophie, psychologie, sociologie) qui donnent ici une éclairante variété d’analyses et de points de vue. Dans un monde où les obscurantismes jouent avec l’idée même de pensée rationnelle, la bafouant ou la retournant comme un gant, un tel livre se veut un humble jalon sur ce chemin rempli de leurres et de nasses... Neuf auteurs partageant une ambition identique : défendre les sciences humaines en affirmant la prévalence de leurs méthodes tout aussi scientifiques que celles des sciences de la nature.
