Die Schlesischen Kriege (1740–1763) setzten zentrale Impulse für die Kulturgeschichte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Dennoch ist ihre Relevanz für die deutsche Literaturgeschichte bislang nicht erschlossen worden. Dieses Buch profiliert erstmals die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen literarischen und politischen Diskursen um 1750, die auf die Entwicklung eines modernen Literaturmodells entscheidenden Einfluss nahmen. Im Fokus dieser Untersuchung steht die neue Faszination für den Krieg, die sich in der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts formierte. Auf breiter Materialbasis verfolgt die Studie sie durch die literatur- und gesellschaftstheoretischen Debatten Europas und des Alten Reichs und fragt nach ihrer diskurshistorischen Signifikanz. Die Aufwertung des Krieges wird dabei als Index für eine Umstellung traditioneller Ordnungssysteme lesbar gemacht, in der die Affekte in Konkurrenz mit der Vernunft traten. So wird die parallele Genese von Lyrik und Patriotismus sichtbar, die sich in der deutschen Kriegsliteratur gegenseitig formatierten – ein Prozess, der moderne Konzepte wie Ausdruckskunst und Nationalliteratur unter neue Vorzeichen stellt. Die Arbeit wurde mit dem Wilhelm-Scherer-Preis 2018 von der Richard M. Meyer Stiftung in Kooperation mit der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und der Freien Universität Berlin ausgezeichnet.

There is a prehistory of the adultery novel, which became a pan-European literary paradigm in the second half of the 19th century. In the wake of the French Revolution, secular marriage legislation emerges, producing a metaphorical surplus that is still effective today. Using legal history and canonical literary texts from Rousseau to Goethe and Manzoni to Hugo and Flaubert, this book traces how marriage around 1800 became a figure of reflection for the modern nation-state. In the process, original contributions to the philology of the individual texts emerge. At the same time, law and literature are made fruitful for a historical semantics of society and community. This book is a translation of an original German 1st edition “Ehe als Nationalfiktion” by Dagmar Stöferle, published by J.B. Der Hymne Der Archipelagus gegenüber pflegte die Hölderlin-Philologie bislang eine kühle Zurückhaltung. Trotz vereinzelter, wenn auch wegweisender, Untersuchungen steht das größte Gedicht Hölderlins im Schatten der bekannten Elegien und der vaterländischen Hymnen, sodass eine grundlegende Studie noch immer fehlte. Von dieser Lage ausgehend wird die vorliegende Studie als Gesamtinterpretation des Archipelagus in Form eines laufenden Kommentars konzipiert. Bei der Kommentierung wird der Schwerpunkt auf die im Gedicht als Folie dienende griechische Literatur gelegt: durch deren Interpretation lässt sich nachweisen, dass Hölderlin Texte wie Hesiods Theogonie, Aischylos’ Perser und Homers Odyssee mit dem Ziel einer eigenen Mythologie verarbeitet hat. Diese gestaltet sich durch ein mythologisches Prinzip, dem wiederum Hölderlins Geschichtsphilosophie zugrunde liegt. Dem mythologischen Inhalt entsprechend erweist sich das Gedicht als klassische Hymne, allerdings mit elegischer Färbung im Sinne Schillers. Insofern ist der Archipelagus sowohl inhaltlich als auch formal das "griechischste" Werk Hölderlins; der vorliegende Band dürfte somit nicht nur für Germanisten, sondern auch für Altphilologen von besonderem Interesse sein.
