The number of patients with dementia is rising in proportion to the aging of our population; therefore, by 2050 the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease is expected to triple, risking the integrity of the entire U.S. healthcare economy. More NIH dollars are spent on Alzheimer's disease research than on any other neurological disease and our available fund of information has commensurately accelerated. Whereas 30 years ago little distinction was made between different forms of dementia, clinicians now distinguish multiple degenerative and vascular syndromes, each with their own etiologic, therapeutic and prognostic implications. New genetic insights reach the popular press on a regular basis. Consequently Alzheimer's disease (and related disorders) has become a special concern to the majority of the population whose main avenue of care lies with the primary care physician. The primary care physician (general internist, family practitioner, nurse practitioner), geriatrician, and geriatric psychiatrist are the target audiences for this book; in short anyone who is not a neurological expert who provides dementia-related care. As the primary care physician is the target audience for this title, the volume begins with a discusion of how to produce an effective diagnosis through a series of precise, easy- to- follow steps. Additional sections detail the current research state of each of the major individual dementia diseases that the general clinician frequently encounters. The last section procides a clinically focused 'how to' guide for treatment including symptom-directed pharmacotherapy, as well as an up-to-date summary of ongoing major therapeutic trials and an assessment non-pharmacological management issues such as driving and end-of- life consideration. Aiming to be clear, consice and practical, this volume provides the essential information in dementia related care, from disease diagnosis to symptom management.

Genetic Variants In Alzheimer S Disease written by Kevin Morgan and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-22 with Medical categories.

Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of dementia. The disease is characterised by the loss of synapses and neurons in the cerebral cortex and certain subcortical regions. In the last three years, the genetics of Alzheimer’s Disease has made significant advances; in fact, one could argue more than in the previous two decades. This has resulted in the identification of nine new genes and perhaps more importantly the realization that new pathways could be involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s. These new pathways are now legitimate targets for therapeutic intervention, which can possibly lead to treatment or a possible cure. The aim of this book is to put all of the recent genetic data on these new genes into context. Different genetic variants will be discussed, as well as biomarkers and future possibilities.

There is a wide scope of clinical phenomenology in Alzheimers disease, regarding the age of onset, presenting features, rate of progression and appearance of other clinical manifestation. Although clinical appearance and neuropathological hallmarks have been defining AD since its first description, major factors which trigger pathology are still unknown. The role of comorbidity is discussed controversially. Important environmental risk factors in AD development are continuous stress, low education and cardiovascular risk factors such as alcohol intake, smoking, hypertension. The role of lipids and cholesterol has been recognized, but the relevant pathogenetic steps are still to be identified. There is an urgent need to understand molecular disease pathogenesis in order to develop early therapeutic targets for the disease.

This book is the outcome of an international conference, held at the Aviya Sonesta Hotel in Eilat, Israel, on March 24-27, 1985. This was the 30th in a series of the annual OHOLO Conferences, sponsored by the Israel Institute for Biological Research. Participants in this Conference consisted of scientists from four teen countries; represented a broad spectrum of research interests; and included a well-balanced representation from academia, clinical institutions and pharmaceutical industry. The book includes talks, poster sessions, and a comprehensive general discussion, all from the proceedings of this conference. In the interest of assuring a rapid publication of the novel infor mation reviewed, this book has been prepared in camera-ready format. We are cognizant of the fact that several typographical errors may exist in the text, and that there are variations in style and typeface of the var ious chapters. This, we felt, was a reasonable compromise for the sake of speed and efficient transmission of valuable scientific information. No body is perfect . •••• The success of the conference, and hence the quality of this book are attributable to the extensive efforts of a large number of extremely capable individuals. These include members of the Scientific Organizing Committee, and the Technical staff of the OHOLO Organization. Of course, the conference could not have succeeded without the high quality of the presentations, and the enthusiastic participation of the contributing scientists.

Pick's Disease and Pick Complex is the first book devoted to Pick's disease and its clinical and pathological manifestations. It sorts through the existing patchwork of terms and entities, and clearly presents the clinical concepts encompassed in this family of syndromes. This volume covers clinical depression, neuropathology, biology, and neurogenetic aspects of the disease. It compares Pick's disease to Alzheimer's, the multiple atrophies, and other neurodegenerative diseases. It also offers a critical review of the pathology and biology involved in other focal atrophies that share certain conditions with Pick's disease. It offers clinical information essential for neurologists, neuropsychologists, geriatricians, psychiatrists, and neuropathologists. It is also an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers.
