The concept of Heimat with its seemingly pre- or anti-modern connotations of rootedness in a place of origin is central to a critical understanding of German history and culture. Over the course of the past fifteen years, scholars across a range of disciplines have found new ways to examine the changing notions of Heimat – its multifaceted cultural, literary, and visual history, its gendered connotations, and its national and ideological appropriations. This anthology is the first to examine cultural manifestations of Heimat by giving special consideration to issues of memory and space. The contributions to this volume challenge static notions of place often associated with Heimat. Instead, they explore the social and cultural production of places of belonging as they emerge in literary and visual narratives ranging from 1800 to 2000 and beyond. Although the anthology includes historical perspectives on Heimat, its overall objective is not to trace its cultural or literary history, but to place this complex term into new conceptual contexts. Drawing attention to manifestations of Heimat within German literary and cultural studies provides a rich ground for exploring the transformation of locality in trans/national contexts.

The heightened resonance of identity-driven politics in many states across twenty first century Europe emphasizes the critical role of history in shaping public contestation of the idea of the nation, and accordant manifestations of nationalism and national identity. How the past is interpreted or what and how is remembered has proven increasingly febrile, contentious, and divisive. Debates about history have gone beyond academia, and have permeated and polarised politics and society in many European countries. Intense debate and dispute about national history and culture has often focused on the history teaching in schools, colleges, and universities. According to the aforementioned, it is evident that the teaching of history in the classroom is a relevant topic within the educational system. For this reason, it is not surprising that many times the choice of what kind of history to teach becomes a controversial topic. The existence in a given society of different visions about the nation or the various responses proposed to face the social challenges existing in it (immigration, independence nationalisms...) can turn the teaching of history into a debated and controversial topic. Logically, depending on the specific political context of each country, this debate can acquire different developments and characteristics. The school is not an institution isolated from its socio-political context. In fact, both areas constantly interact. Therefore, this book proposes an approach to this topic that tries to connect the specific political context of different countries with the debates about education and history teaching from 1990 until the present. It deals with the extent to which the social and political context affects the history teaching practice developed in the classrooms through the decisions made on the official curricula and textbooks. Emphasizing this connection between both aspects is one of the strengths of this book. That is the reason why this book proposes an approach to that reality from diverse points of view and show the different materializations observed in this area in the studied cases. The chapters of this volume allow us to verify this heterogeneous reality and help enrich our knowledge on this broad and interesting topic.

Heimat – Land – Jugendkultur" erforschte gemeinsam mit einem bunten Strauß aus quantitativen und qualitativen Befragungen, Workshops, Fachtagungen und journalistischen Erkundungen die Lebensperspektiven von Jugendlichen in ländlichen Regionen Deutschlands. Denn nachhaltige Veränderungen lassen sich heute nur noch erzielen, wenn die Menschen selbst aktiv mitwirken (dürfen). Das gilt nicht nur für Großbauprojekte, sondern auch für Jugendliche. Identifikation – mit der Schule, dem Jugendhaus, der Gemeinde – entsteht letztlich durch Teilhabe und die Erfahrung von Respekt. Damit das Dorf bleibt, muss es sich wandeln.

Dagegen tritt dieses Buch an: Wir dürfen den Rechten nicht das Begriffs-Arsenal überlassen, mit denen wir alle für dumm verkauft werden sollen.

Der Begriff »Heimat« ist derzeit in aller Munde. Wenig verwunderlich mag noch erscheinen, dass die zuletzt auch in Deutschland mit Aplomb emporgekommene politische Rechte die Notwendigkeit von kultureller Identität, völkischer Gemeinschaft und nationaler Heimat als Arznei gegen das vermeintliche Gift von grenzüberschreitender Globalisierung und wissensgesellschaftlicher Vereinzelung propagiert. Überraschend mutet dagegen die aktuelle Konjunktur des Heimat-Themas im Spektrum links-liberaler Parteien, Literaten, Kulturschaffender an. Besteht die auf den ersten Blick anachronistisch anmutende Attraktivität der Idee der Heimat darin, dass sie sich »am mentalen Verkehrsknotenpunkt von Globalisierung, romantischem Neo-Konservatismus und neuen politischen und gesellschaftlichen Konfliktlinien« (Koppetsch) befindet? Verbindet sich die Heimat-Renaissance also mit der Frage nach Sicherheit und der Suche nach verlässlichen Bindungen in Zeiten des digitalen und ökonomischen Wandels? Oder spielen Flucht- und Migrationsbewegungen diesbezüglich die entscheidende Rolle, dies im Sinne einer Verlustangst bei Teilen der deutschen Gesellschaft angesichts der Zuwanderung von ethnisch, sprachlich, kulturell Fremden? Lässt sich dergleichen gar historisch verallgemeinern, korrespondieren Heimat-Boomphasen also generell mit tiefgreifenden gesellschaftlichen, ökonomischen und/oder kulturellen Transformationen – vom Aufkommen der Heimat-Bewegungen gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts bis hin zur »Ostalgiewelle« in den 1990er Jahren? Grundsätzlicher noch: Was ist das überhaupt, Heimat? Diesen Fragen geht die INDES in diesem Heft nach.
