The advent of formal independence in former French colonies in Black Africa meant the dawn of a new era: the struggle against neocolonialism. African students rallying around this struggle became new strangers and targets for expulsion out of France. The French government of the time resorted, therefore, to massive expulsions against their labour and political organizations. The implementation in 1956 of the Loi-cadre Gaston Defferre - meant to divide up Black Africa under French dominion - and the ensuing explosion of the two great AOF and AEF federations along with the cancellation of scholarship federal commissions will considerably weaken the Fédération des étudiants d'Afrique noire en France (FEANF) [African Student Federation in France] in favour of territorial sections. This meant that African governments were to take charge of their own students. In turn, the former used their embassies and scholarship territorial commissions to squelch those student organizations that were hostile to their collaboration with the French authorities. Among the repressive strategies were the cancellation of scholarships and grants to hotels and residences that were reserved for their students (La Maison de la Côte d'Ivoire, du Gabon, de la Haute Volta, du Congo, d'AOF), the creation of pro-government associations such as that of the Senegalese Progressive Union (UPS), the Student Movement for the African and Malagasy Organization (MEOCAM), and the National Union for Students of Côte d'Ivoire (UNECI). This marked the beginning of the decline of the Fédération des étudiants d'Afrique noire en France (FEANF). The worm had entered the fruit of unity with the implementation of the Loi-cadre.

From Ghanaian protests over Gandhi statues to American Vice President Kamala Harris's story, this relationship--notwithstanding moments of common struggle--seethes with conflicts that reveal how race reverberates throughout the modern world. Shobana Shankar's groundbreaking intellectual history tackles the controversial question of how Africans and Indians make and unmake their differences. Drawing on archival and oral sources from seven countries, she traces how economic tensions surrounding the Indian diaspora in East and Southern Africa collided with widening Indian networks in West Africa and the Black Atlantic, forcing a racial reckoning over the course of the twentieth century. While decolonization brought Africans and Indians together to challenge Euro-American white supremacy, discord over caste, religion, sex and skin color simmered beneath the rhetoric of Afro-Asian solidarity. This book examines the cultural movements, including Pan-Africanism and popular devotionalism, through which Africans and Indians made race consciousness, alongside economic cooperation, a moral priority. How Arabic influenced the evolution of vernacular literatures and anticolonial thought in Egypt, Indonesia, and Senegal Sacred Language, Vernacular Difference offers a new understanding of Arabic’s global position as the basis for comparing cultural and literary histories in countries separated by vast distances. By tracing controversies over the use of Arabic in three countries with distinct colonial legacies, Egypt, Indonesia, and Senegal, the book presents a new approach to the study of postcolonial literatures, anticolonial nationalisms, and the global circulation of pluralist ideas. Annette Damayanti Lienau presents the largely untold story of how Arabic, often understood in Africa and Asia as a language of Islamic ritual and precolonial commerce, assumed a transregional role as an anticolonial literary medium in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By examining how major writers and intellectuals across several generations grappled with the cultural asymmetries imposed by imperial Europe, Lienau shows that Arabic—as a cosmopolitan, interethnic, and interreligious language—complicated debates over questions of indigeneity, religious pluralism, counter-imperial nationalisms, and emerging nation-states. La période allant de 1955 à 1960 est la période des grands combats menés par le mouvement étudiant africain. Le souffle de la conférence de Bandung tenue en 1955 a profondément touché le continent africain qui est devenu un grand théâtre de la lutte pour l'indépendance. La France a subi sa plus cuisante défaite à Dien Bien Phu en Indochine en 1954. Elle a connu de grands revers en Afrique du Nord avec les indépendances du Maroc et de la Tunisie. La guerre d'Algérie est le plus grand coup porté à la France coloniale. L'indépendance du Ghana en 1957 a ouvert une large brèche dans l'édifice colonial français. La loi-cadre de Gaston Defferre a été conçue pour arrêter le mouvement de libération africain. L'année 1960 a été baptisée année de l'Afrique à la suite de l'octroi des indépendances formelles à ses colonies par la France. Les autorités coloniales ont décidé de liquider la FEANF en créant des mouvements sécessionnistes. Le ver de la division est dans le fruit. Ainsi la glorieuse FEANF va entamer une période de déclin qui la conduira à sa mort décrétée en 1980 par le gouvernement de Valéry Giscard D'Estaing.
