Amar se aprende amando é um lindo panorama das diferentes formas de amar. "O mundo é grande e cabe / nesta janela sobre o mar. / O mar é grande e cabe / na cama e no colchão de amar. / O amor é grande e cabe / no breve espaço de beijar." Com versos assim, que conciliam sofisticação e simplicidade, esta coletânea exalta o mais nobre "sentimento do mundo". Publicado originalmente em 1985, apenas dois anos antes da morte de Drummond, Amar se aprende amando nos revela as diferentes facetas do amor. Para falar delas, o poeta sempre encontra um viés inusitado (como nos saborosos neologismos "sempreamar" e "pluriamar"), que evidencia sua aversão à retórica e evita a pieguice que ronda a poesia quando se fala das "coisas do coração". Seus versos fazem aquilo que para muitos é impossível: traduzem sentimentos indescritíveis em palavras. Se o amor romântico, aquele precedido pela paixão arrebatadora, tem destaque em poemas impactantes como "Amor" e "Lira do amor romântico", Drummond também mostra que "O amor antigo tem raízes fundas, / feitas de sofrimento e de beleza". Na segunda seção do livro, abre o leque para compor poemas magistrais sobre o amor fraterno, com destaque para o comovente "Companheiro", feito para os 80 anos do amigo Pedro Nava. Na última parte, o poeta incorpora o cronista em versos tirados da realidade brasileira, que, àquela altura, caminhava para uma transição democrática depois dos amargos "anos de chumbo". Em Amar se aprende amando, o leitor convive com um Drummond atento à realidade, lírico e genial.
