Stories of heroism, exploration, and sacrifice -- including Apollo XIII and Scott of the Antarctic -- that inspire boys to be courageous, selfless, and open to adventure Tales of brave and selfless deeds used to be part of every boy’s education. We grew up sharing stories with our fathers, uncles, and grandfathers of how other men had lived their lives, met their challenges, reached their goals, and faced their deaths. Becoming a man was about comradeship and standing by your friends whatever the circumstances. And it meant that sometimes it was more important to die a hero than live a coward’s life. Through Neil Oliver’s vivid, stirring accounts we can rediscover the stories that inspire men to perform acts greater than themselves. These are the epics that we should all know by heart; the tales of courage, endurance, and sacrifice that made men out of boys. Amazing Tales for Making Men Out of Boys is packed with classic stories of courage and heroism from around the world and includes four stories especially for the American edition: Omaha Beach, June 6th 1944; The Alamo; The Civil War Battle of Shilo; and The Revolutionary War Sea Battle of John Paul Jones and the Bon Homme Richard.

The book includes intimate snapshots of particularly relevant moments—rare glimpses behind the scenes—in order bring you back to the moment. This was a group of bona fide characters who showed great character in facing every challenge put before them—including overcoming a three games to none deficit in the ALCS against their archrivals. The season had more than its share of the humorous, the poignant, and the downright weird. Thanks to an unconventional and irreverent—but effective—approach to the game, the underdog 2004 Red Sox captured the imagination of New England and the entire nation. In their quixotic quest, they defied an ancient curse and slew the hated Yankees en route to the October Classic and a meeting with the St. Louis Cardinals. The University of Arkansas and its Razorbacks hold a special place in the hearts of Arkansans, not simply because the state has no professional sports teams, but because of the colorful players and coaches who have passed through the campus gates. Author Nate Allen chronicles the good, the bad, and the funny from UA’s athletic history, as found in Tales from Hog Heaven and More Tales from Hog Heaven, in Amazing Tales from Hog Heaven. Fans will be able to read tales of some of the legendary Razorbacks through the decades—from 1st team All-American Ronnie Caveness to eventual Chicago Bears Hall of Fame player Dan Hampton, and so many others. Allen covers the football program’s adjustment in 1998 from the dour Danny Ford to the upbeat Houston Nutt, and Lou Holtz’s one-liners that seared their targets, but sometimes boomeranged. They will meet the legendary track coach who told one of his Irish athletes “to row back home,” and read about sportswriter Orville Henry’s penchant for deflating self-important bowl officials. Amazing Tales from Hog Heaven is a must-have addition to any Razorback fan’s library.

Time Machine Tales written by Paul J. Nahin and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-24 with Science categories.

This book contains a broad overview of time travel in science fiction, along with a detailed examination of the philosophical implications of time travel. The emphasis of this book is now on the philosophical and on science fiction, rather than on physics, as in the author's earlier books on the subject. In that spirit there are, for example, no Tech Notes filled with algebra, integrals, and differential equations, as there are in the first and second editions of TIME MACHINES. Writing about time travel is, today, a respectable business. It hasn’t always been so. After all, time travel, prima facie, appears to violate a fundamental law of nature; every effect has a cause, with the cause occurring before the effect. Time travel to the past, however, seems to allow, indeed to demand, backwards causation, with an effect (the time traveler emerging into the past as he exits from his time machine) occurring before its cause (the time traveler pushing the start button on his machine’s control panel to start his trip backward through time). Time Machine Tales includes new discussions of the advances by physicists and philosophers that have appeared since the publication of TIME MACHINES in 1999, examples of which are the chapters on time travel paradoxes. Those chapters have been brought up-to-date with the latest philosophical thinking on the paradoxes.

More Amazing Tales From Indiana written by Fred D. Cavinder and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-11-19 with History categories.

The stories in this book will provide entertainment for everyone and evoke wonder in the most jaded observer of the human condition. Some of the exploits that Fred D. Cavinder describes are half-hidden footnotes to national and international happenings. Others seem so typical of Indiana that they will appeal to anyone who understands the Hoosier spirit. But all of them are true—recorded in reliable accounts or by reliable witnesses from early times to the present. In "Saving Face," Cavinder introduces us to General Ambrose Burnside of Liberty. Burnside blundered his way through the Civil War, relocated to Rhode Island, and served three terms as governor and two terms as U.S. Senator. But what we really remember Burnside for is his unique facial hair—his "sideburns." Did you know that Indiana produced three of the movie Tarzans? In "AHHaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiieeeeeeeee!" you can find out who they were. With its sometimes quirky stories about the Hoosier state, More Amazing Tales from Indiana will be a ready companion for the bedside table and will provide a wellspring of anecdotes for speechmakers and pundits.
