This book covers 250 years of Amazonian economic history in three chapters focusing on fundamental periods. The first section provides a unique discussion of the dynamics of the colonial Amazonian economy (1720-1822), the role of the religious orders and trade companies, and the formation of a caboclo-peasantry. This is followed by an original analysis of the rubber economy (1850-1920), based on classical and unprecedented data and considering the role of both the caboclo-peasants and the big rubber plots in the mercantile chains. The third chapter presents a pioneering analysis of the rural and urban dynamics of the post-rubber boom era which lasted until the 1960s.
