La disinformazione è, a nostro parere, il problema più grave per quanto riguarda il complesso tematico Energia, Sviluppo, Ambiente. L’obiettivo di questo testo è stato quello di sviluppare nel lettore una sua documentata capacità critica. Lo spirito critico è il timone di tutte le scienze; per gli argomenti qui trattati deve essere ancor più tutelato in quanto soggetto agli interessi e quindi alle influenze economiche e politiche che questa tematica attira su di sé. Una delle maggiori soddisfazioni per chi si occupa di didattica è di stimolare l’interesse e la curiosità dello studente per l’argomento trattato al punto da farlo diventare centrale nella propria carriera scolastica e, magari, anche nella vita professionale. L’augurio da farsi agli studenti ed a tutti coloro che si accostano a questa tematica è di provare sempre la stessa originaria curiosità che li porti ad affrontare con documentata capacità critica le rinnovate sfide poste dai problemi dell’energia. Questo testo dal titolo “Energia, Sviluppo, Ambiente” è una raccolta organica di scritti relativi a questi argomenti, nata inizialmente come dispensa per gli studenti di Ingegneria energetica. I temi trattati sono: Le fonti primarie di energia Le tecnologie di conversione L’energia elettrica L’impatto ambientale a livello locale e a livello di clima globale Disponibilità energetica e sviluppo I vari contributi sono stati stilati da diversi autori e sono stati raccolti e coordinati da noi. Si è puntato su una visione globale del problema energia, citando solo sporadicamente la situazione dell’Italia nel quadro di riferimento internazionale. Questo testo può servire come riferimento per un insegnamento di base sui problemi energetico-ambientali (quale ad esempio Fondamenti di Energetica), ma può anche servire come riferimento per chi volesse approfondire autonomamente questo argomento. I temi trattati sono soggetti a veloce obsolescenza, per questo si è tentato di privilegiare gli aspetti formativi dei dati statistici. Si è inserita all’inizio del testo una “Storia dell’energia” interamente tratta da uno scritto del prof. Mario Silve- stri (1919-1994), indimenticabile scienziato promotore degli studi sui problemi energetici dai lontani anni ‘60. In questa attività di coordinamento ci sono state di grande aiuto le collabora- zioni degli Ingg. Giancarlo Manzoni, Andrea Casalegno e Alberto Rota. A loro, agli autori dei diversi capitoli e ad altri colleghi con cui spesso c’è stato scambio di opinioni sui temi dell’energia e dell’ambiente vanno i nostri rin- graziamenti.

Disposal of organic sludge and liquid agricultural wastes is a universal problem. Their production cannot be halted and as steps are taken to maintain or improve the quality of rivers and lakes it grows in quanti ty. The Commission's early awareness of the need for action to prepare for substantial growth in the Community's' sludge disposal problem led to the setting up of the COST 68 project to coordinate and guide European research and development work with particular emphasis on recycling sludge to agricultural land. Two years ago the field of research activi ties was extended to liquid agricultural wastes. This Symposium is the latest opportunity to provide a comprehensive review of the results of the project, to define current trends in practice and to establish by discussion the priorities for research over the next few years. The development of instrumentation and of analytical techniques during the period has extended our knowledge of the organic and inorganic constituents of sewage sludge and agricultural wastes and enabled us more readily to identify and measure the risks to which our general environment may be exposed when disposing of it. This evolution of understanding is a continuing process and an essential guide to the modification of disposal practices to achieve safer and more efficient operations. However, it is important to take a broad view of the application of research findings in the light of the considerable contrast in conditions in different parts of the world.

In Contesting Hydropower in the Brazilian Amazon, Ed Atkins focuses on how local, national, and international civil society groups have resisted the Belo Monte and São Luiz do Tapajós hydroelectric projects in Brazil. In doing so, Atkins explores how contemporary opposition to hydropower projects demonstrate a form of ‘contested sustainability’ that highlights the need for sustainable energy transitions to take more into account than merely greenhouse gas emissions. The assertion that society must look to successfully transition away from fossil fuels and towards sustainable energy sources often appears assured in contemporary environmental governance. However, what is less certain is who decides which forms of energy are deemed ‘sustainable.’ Contesting Hydropower in the Brazilian Amazon explores one process in which the sustainability of a ‘green’ energy source is contested. It focuses on how civil society actors have both challenged and reconfigured dominant pro-dam assertions that present the hydropower schemes studied as renewable energy projects that contribute to sustainable development agendas. The volume also examines in detail how anti-dam actors act to render visible the political interests behind a project, whilst at the same time linking the resistance movement to wider questions of contemporary environmental politics. This interdisciplinary work will be of great interest to students and scholars of sustainable development, sustainable energy transitions, environmental justice, environmental governance, and development studies.
