A small area of western Pennsylvania around Pittsburgh has produced almost 25 percent of the modern era quarter- backs enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. That percentage is wildly disproportionate to the number of superstar quarterbacks any one state might claim, let alone a mere sliver of a state--an area representing just one-fifth of one percent of the total country. The list of the greats starts with George Blanda, the "old man" of the game, and continues with the incomparable Johnny Unitas, followed by "Broadway" Joe Namath, Joe "the Comeback Kid" Montana, Dan Marino, and Jim Kelly. Their stories, feats, and statistics are brought to life in America's Football Factory through riveting anecdotes, extensive research, and exclusive interviews with their coaches, friends, family, and peers. Readers will appreciate getting to know these athletes as people, not merely as football heroes. Stewart also explores the many theories as to why one part of the nation has churned out so many greats. Hall of Famers Raymond Berry and Mike Ditka lavished praise on the first edition of this book. "Any fan of my era, of my friend Johnny Unitas, or, for that matter, any fan of football in general should enjoy Wayne Stewart's book," said Berry. Ditka, himself a Western Pennsylvanian, wrote in the book's introduction, "You can't get much better than the primary six men featured in this book." He's correct--upon their retirement, all six of the book's featured quarterbacks were in the top 12 for touchdown passes, and five of them were in the top 10. America's Football Factory also features other greats from the Pittsburgh vicinity, including Johnny Lujack, Babe Parilli, and Marc Bulger, and the area's best high school programs for producing quarterbacks are also discussed.

Any fan of the Baltimore Colts of my era, any fan of my friend and teammate Johnny Unitas, or, for that matter, any fan of football in general should enjoy Wayne Stewart's book. It contains great stories, statistics, and information on all of the many great quarterbacks who came out of Western Pennsylvania and much more. Raymond Berry NFL Hall of Fame Wide Receiver (Baltimore Colts 1955-67) It's well known that the NFL has been dominated through the years by quarterbacks sown and grown in a relatively small area surrounding the city of Pittsburgh in Western Pennsylvania. In America¿s Cradle of Quarterbacks, author Wayne Stewart not only tells us who they are, he digs deep to explain the nature and nurture behind the rich harvest of signal callers (Montana, Unitas, Marino, Namath, Kelly, Blanda, etc.) who have risen from that fertile soil to claim Lombardi Trophies and dominate the gallery of busts in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Stewart has written a fascinating book that belongs on the shelves of football historians and everyday fans alike. Jeffrey J. What does the world's favorite sport mean in the United States? Despite the common belief that it is only a women's sport, an immigrants' sport, a small kids' sport--or that hating soccer is very American, the new essays in this volume attest that soccer indeed is a very American and very popular sport, around since the 1940s. The all-new essays address issues concerning the business of the game, the meaning of men's and women's professional, national, high school and youth soccer, the community formed by the game, the media, the referees, the hooliganism and the treatment of the sport in academe.

Discover a groundbreaking vision for how to unlock America’s full potential for greatness from one of the country’s foremost conservative leaders: David McCormick, the former CEO of Bridgewater Associates. It’s easy to be pessimistic about the state of our country these days, but as McCormick explains, if the true test of a great country is its capacity for self-renewal, the United States of America stands apart. Our country has continually defeated grave threats and overcome domestic divisions when the odds have been stacked against us. That’s the American story, and we can do it again. Drawing on decades of leadership in business, the military, and government, McCormick issues a call for visionary, servant leadership and outlines a conservative agenda for American renewal that would expand access to the American Dream, ensure U.S. technological supremacy, confront China, and revive the restless, courageous, and indefatigable spirit that dwells within the American heart. This book is a must read for those who care deeply about the future of America. McCormick, a former candidate for the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania in 2022, argues the path forward is treacherous and uncertain. It will undoubtedly test our resilience and place in the world. But if we commit ourselves to renewal, America's best days are yet to come.

"Impressively detailed. . . . An authoritative and epic overview."—Publishers Weekly In the convulsive years between 1920 and 941, Americans were first dazzled by unprecedented economic prosperity and then beset by the worst depression in their history. It was the era of Model T's, rising incomes, scientific management, electricity, talking movies, and advertising techniques that sold a seemingly endless stream of goods. But is was also a time of grave social conflict and human suffering. The Crash forced Hoover, and then Roosevelt and the nation, to reexamine old solutions and address pressing questions of recovery and reform, economic growth and social justice. The world beyond America changed also in these years, making the country rethink its relation to events in Europe, Latin America, and Asia. The illusion of superiority slowly died in the 1930s, sustaining a fatal blow in December 1941 at Pearl Harbor.

Meet the fans prepared to go to the furthest extremes to defend their team's honor. Actor Danny Dyer, star of the hit film The Football Factory, took a film crew with him to meet all of these gangs, and this is the full story of what happened when he did. Join him on a journey around the hooligan world in 90 days, visiting nine countries in 12 weeks to meet the nastiest, naughtiest European soccer hooligans on the planet. Shot at, stoned, glassed, and tear gassed, they survived gunfire in Brazil, a riot in Poland, and the opportunity to stand shoulder to shoulder with the foreign teams as it all goes off. Full of spine-chilling encounters, extraordinary characters, and brutal clashes, this book shows that soccer hooliganism is alive and kicking--all over the world.
