Excerpt from American Fiction This contribution to the technique of the American short story, though of great importance, was not unique: almost simultaneously with Hawthorne, Poe, with more attention to technique and a wider range of subject and of mood, was strengthening what has so far been our most distinctive American contribution to prose fiction. The detective story, the tale of horror, and the story of the grotesque were all executed by Poe with the same attention to form. Whatever one may think of his sense of probability and of his some what tricky use of devices for hypnotizing the reader, one cannot possibly deny the service of his stories - or the serv ice of the criticism with which they were accompanied - to the upbuilding of an important school. It is singular, in view of the humor and the formlessness of so much early American writing, that both Poe and Hawthorne should have thus persistently combined masterly correctness with an almost obstinate preference for horror, mystery, and gloom. In these two great founders of our fiction there is no marked localization: both are vivid - Poe brilliantly and Hawthorne quietly so - yet neither is much interested in studying any particular region. Their successors have, how ever, almost with one accord, studied the landscape, the dialect, and most Of all the manner of life in various American localities. Of these writers of American short stories distinguished for their careful employment of local color, Bret Harte deserves special notice, because of the novelty of his material and the tremendous sensation which his Cali formia stories produced in the seventies. Since his day every section of the country has been more or less successfully, but always carefully, represented in the short story. Excerpt from Stories by American Authors "And I - what I seem to my friend, you see - What I soon shall seem to his love, you guess. What I seem to myself, do you ask of me? No hero, I confess." A Light Woman. - Browning's Men and Women April 4, 1857. - I have changed my sky without changing my mind. I resume these old notes in a new world. I hardly know of what use they are; but it's easier to stick to the habit than to drop it. I have been at home now a week - at home, forsooth! And yet, after all, it is home. I am dejected, I am bored, I am blue. How can a man be more at home than that? Nevertheless, I am the citizen of a great country, and for that matter, of a great city. I walked to-day some ten miles or so along Broadway, and on the whole I don't blush for my native land. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of American Literature The general purpose in the preparation of this book has, been to eliminate negligible detail and to subordinate or omit authors of minor importance in order to stress the men and the movements that are most significant in American intel lectual history/ The book has therefore been written with a view to showing the drift of American thought as illustrated by major writers or groups and as revealed by a careful study of one or two cardinal works by each. In this sequence of thought the growth of American self-consciousness and the changing ideals of American patriotism have been kept in mind throughout. The attempt is made to induce study of representative classics and extensive reading of the American literature which illuminates the past of the country chiefly, of course, in reminiscent fiction, drama, and poetry. Excerpt from A General Survey of American Literature HE following book on American literature has grown largely out Of the author's work in the class-room. There was no hurried daily flight from author to author, leaving upon the mind of the pupil a confused impression of dates, names, and lists of books; but a careful and prolonged attention was given to the author as a man and a thinker. Excerpt from American Literature Lowell said that the existence of literature is the final proof that man is civilized. Literature is the reflection chiefly of things within ourselves, things of the mind and of the will. Within the past few years mankind has been endur 'ing war, with all of its dreadful accompaniments, and has come to desire deeply new assurances that civilization has existed and still exists. An intimate study of the literature of America reveals that the spirit of civilization, which is the art of living together, has been strong in the thought and will of the men who have lived upon this continent from the beginning of its coloniza tion by Europeans until this day. Americans, in the main, have been distinctive among the peoples of the world for having fashioned their inner lives in accordance with the impulse to live as if all men were neighbors. This democratic 'spirit largely characterizes artistic production in our society, especially in the field of literature. Within recent years, as never before, events have taught the danger of the expression of pride. Yet it would be less than honorable if we were not proud to believe that this democratic spirit of American literature is the spirit upon which future civilization may best be based.
