Excerpt from Early American Literature: A Study Outline In this outline the points given for each paper are suggestions which embody the salient facts about the author. They may be treated as questions to be looked up by the whole club, they may be assigned to individuals, or they may be treated as a whole by one person. Each one who is responsible for a main topic is advised to use his own judgment in handling his subject and in bringing out other phases than those outlined. The Readings are also suggestions for which other selections may be substituted. The Recommended Reading represents the general consensus of opinion of critics and writers as to the best work of the various authors. Quotations have been freely given in the hope that they may help to a better and more sympathetic understanding of the author, and with the intent that each one may study and decide independently whether as estimates they are just and true. Sometimes special references are given under individual topics. It has not been the intention to make these take the place of the general references which it is well to study in every case. They have been given simply as a help to material bearing on a particular phase of the subject. The bibliography has been limited to a few books and to the best articles in periodicals most easily procurable. If it is thought that too many histories of American literature are cited the critical comments in the Bibliography will serve as an aid in selecting those most helpful. Excerpt from American Fiction This contribution to the technique of the American short story, though of great importance, was not unique: almost simultaneously with Hawthorne, Poe, with more attention to technique and a wider range of subject and of mood, was strengthening what has so far been our most distinctive American contribution to prose fiction. The detective story, the tale of horror, and the story of the grotesque were all executed by Poe with the same attention to form. Whatever one may think of his sense of probability and of his some what tricky use of devices for hypnotizing the reader, one cannot possibly deny the service of his stories - or the serv ice of the criticism with which they were accompanied - to the upbuilding of an important school. It is singular, in view of the humor and the formlessness of so much early American writing, that both Poe and Hawthorne should have thus persistently combined masterly correctness with an almost obstinate preference for horror, mystery, and gloom. In these two great founders of our fiction there is no marked localization: both are vivid - Poe brilliantly and Hawthorne quietly so - yet neither is much interested in studying any particular region. Their successors have, how ever, almost with one accord, studied the landscape, the dialect, and most Of all the manner of life in various American localities. Of these writers of American short stories distinguished for their careful employment of local color, Bret Harte deserves special notice, because of the novelty of his material and the tremendous sensation which his Cali formia stories produced in the seventies. Since his day every section of the country has been more or less successfully, but always carefully, represented in the short story. Excerpt from Early American Fiction, 1774-1830: A Compilation of the Titles of Works of Fiction, Written by Writers Born or Residing in North America, and Printed Previous to 1831 In my collations I have used a method not in general use, but which I believe when better understood will be followed by other workers in the bibliographical field. In all cases where I am enabled to give full collations I include in each instance the title leaf as the first two pages which are included in those unnumbered and which are bracketted. All paginations given in brackets denote the fact that such pages are unnumbered. For Example, a work whose pagination is given as pp. -4-197, would have the first three pages (including title leaf) unnumbered, these unnumbered pp. Being followed by pp. 4 to 197, these numbered pages in turn being followed by 3 unnumbered pages. I have followed this rule in all but a few cases. When the Author's name is printed in brackets, it denotes that the book in question was issued anonymously. In all but a few instances I have noted only the first edition of each publication. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of American Literature This book attempts to trace within reasonable compass the course of literary development in America, and to present the most significant facts regarding American authors and their works. It places greatest emphasis on general move ments because American literature is first of all important as an expression of national life. There are few American writings that require careful analysis and merit intensive study as masterpieces. But in a nation where education has from the first been so generally diffused, literary attempts of slight artistic merit may reflect not only the obvious changes in national life and ideals, but subtler tendencies and aspira tions. For this reason attention is given not only to the few greater writers, but to many others whose works, though less important in themselves, are sometimes even more sig nificant. The plan of the book and the decision what to include and what to exclude have been influenced by the author's experiences with college classes but an attempt has been made to meet the wants of the general reader as well as those of the systematic student. In tracing tendencies and movements it has been necessary to adopt a geographical classification of authors; and this has sometimes been carried beyond the point where it is significant. It is a matter of the greatest importance whether an author represents the Spirit of Puritan New England or the spirit of Cavalier Virginia; it is of little importance whether he chances to write in New Hampshire or in Ver mont. For convenience, however, smaller as well as larger groupings have been made on the basis of residence. In adopting this plan the author wishes to disclaim any intention of over-emphasizing sectional differences. Excerpt from Romances of Early America Position of the lad who, when twitted about his youth, answered that he would outgrow the fault, if given a little time. America is fast outgrowing this fault of extreme youth. The country already has a past of which it may be proud, and one that is full of pictur esqueness. The more it is written about the more inter esting it seems, and the greater is the wonder that the New World offers so much pleasant romance to the reader. The age in which we live may be prosaic, and marked by the worship of Mammon, yet the public never showed a livelier appreciation than it does now of the dead-and-gone heroes and heroines who lived and loved, lost or won, in the early days of our history. I trust, therefore, that a place in the bookcase may be found for these Romances of Early America. The characters of whom they treat faded into shadows many years ago, but the theme of the volume - the old, old story - is ever new, and worth the telling. Excerpt from American Authors: A Hand-Book of American Literature From Early Colonial to Living Writers To prepare a text-book of American literature is a difficult task. It 'is utterly impossible to give every writer a place in so small a compass, and, as a matter of fact, justice cannot be done every section of our broad land. Especially do we realize this to be true, when we discover that in the South alone there are over writers, to say naught of the remaining three-sections. While we trust a spirit of fairness shall per vade our work, we know that in the judgment of many wise critics some names will be omitted contrary to their opinion, and many inserted which they think should have been omitted. Every compiler of a work of this kind is subject to this criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A First View of English and American Literature This volume is based upon the authors' more advanced H istory of English Literature. The aim has been to pre serve those features of the previous book Which have most commended themselves to high-school and academy teach ers, to remove everything Which they have found too de tailed or too difiicult for their students, and to add Whatever was suggested by their friendly criticism as likely to in crease the value of the book in class-room practice. The literary comment has been simplified, partly by omission, partly by the substitution of explicit statement in the place of What was before only suggested. The number of authors treated has been much reduced, and the attention of the student centred exclusively on a few great representative figures. More space has been given to biography and de scriptive sketches, especially in the later periods. Each main epoch has been prefaced by a full historical introduction, and summarized in the form of a review-commentary and questions, together with tabular views. Suggestions con cerning the best available texts, and the best biographical and critical aids to study, are given at the close of each chapter. A number of portraits are added, taken in each case from an authentic source. For purposes of fuller refer ence, some authors not treated in the text are included in the tabular views. Excerpt from The Job: An American Novel He believed that Panama, Pennsylvania, was good enough for anybody. This last opinion was not shared by his wife, nor by his daughter Una. Mrs. Golden was one of tue women who aspire just enough to be vaguely discontented; not enough to make them toil at the acquisition of understanding and knowl edge. She had floated into a comfortable semi-belief in a semi-christian Science, and she read novels with a conviction that she would have been a romantic person if she hadn't married Mr. Golden - not but what he's a fine man and very bright and all, but he hasn't got much imagination or any, well, romance!
