George S. Patton Jr. lived an exciting life in war and peace, but he is best remembered for his World War II battlefield exploits. Patton’s War: An American General’s Combat Leadership: November 1942–July 1944, the first of three volumes, follows the general from the beaches of Morocco to the fields of France, right before the birth of Third Army on the continent. In highly engaging fashion, Kevin Hymel uncovers new facts and challenges long-held beliefs about the mercurial Patton, not only examining his relationships with his superiors and fellow generals and colonels, but also with the soldiers of all ranks whom he led. Using new sources unavailable to previous historians and through extensive research of soldiers’ memoirs and interviews, Hymel adds a new dimension to the telling of Patton’s WWII story.

American General written by John S.D. Eisenhower and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-07 with History categories.

From respected historian John S. D. Eisenhower comes a surprising portrait of William Tecumseh Sherman, the Civil War general whose path of destruction cut the Confederacy in two, broke the will of the Southern population, and earned him a place in history as “the first modern general.” Yet behind his reputation as a fierce warrior was a sympathetic man of complex character. A century and a half after the Civil War, Sherman remains one of its most controversial figures—the soldier who brought the fight not only to the Confederate Army, but to Confederate civilians as well. Yet Eisenhower, a West Point graduate and a retired brigadier general (Army Reserves), finds in Sherman a man of startling contrasts, not at all defined by the implications of “total war.” His scruffy, disheveled appearance belied an unconventional and unyielding intellect. Intensely loyal to superior officers, especially Ulysses S. Grant, he was also a stalwart individualist. Confident enough to make demands face-to-face with President Lincoln, he sympathetically listened to the problems of newly freed slaves on his famed march from Atlanta to Savannah. Dubbed “no soldier” during his years at West Point, Sherman later rose to the rank of General of the Army, and though deeply committed to the Union cause, he held the people of the South in great affection. In this remarkable reassessment of Sherman’s life and career, Eisenhower takes readers from Sherman’s Ohio origins and his fledgling first stint in the Army, to his years as a businessman in California and his hurried return to uniform at the outbreak of the war. From Bull Run through Sherman’s epic March to the Sea, Eisenhower offers up a fascinating narrative of a military genius whose influence helped preserve the Union—and forever changed war.

General of the Armies John J. Pershing (1860–1948) had a long and distinguished military career, but he is most famous for leading the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. He published a memoir, My Experiences in the World War, and has been the subject of numerous biographies, but the literature regarding this towering figure and his enormous role in the First World War deserves to be expanded to include a collection of his wartime correspondence. Meticulously edited by John T. Greenwood, volume 2 of John J. Pershing and the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I, 1917–1919 covers the period of October 1 through December 31, 1917. During this time, Pershing focused his efforts on working with the French Ministry of War, the General Staff, and the field Army on training and equipping the AEF's few available combat divisions for frontline service. Russia's defection from the coalition and the surprising Italian defeat at Caporetto in October rocked the Allied ranks, and this volume addresses the creation of the Supreme War Council and the House's American War Mission—bodies that reexamined the Entente's military and diplomatic strategy and ultimately cemented the alliance. The correspondence also reveals how the House Mission revived the divisive issue of amalgamating arriving American troops into existing British and French combat divisions—something that Pershing utterly opposed and saw as a threat to the AEF. The dispute never resolved and irritated British prime minister Lloyd George and French premier Georges Clemenceau so much that both would try to engineer Pershing's removal in the following year. Extracts from the large volume of rarely referenced cablegrams represent an important contribution to Pershing's wartime story.
