Excerpt from The Plain Story of American History My purpose in writing this book is expressed in the title. I wish that it may be a plain story of the achievement of human beings in that part of the Western Hemisphere which is now the United States of America. To relate the main facts clearly and broadly, rather than to describe many detailed occurrences, has been constantly in my mind. The story here presented may be taken as an introduction for a wider study of our history. It has been my aim to use simple but strong language, and to place the emphasis of the book on human actions. But much attention has been given to social history, and in two chapters the outlines of American government have been presented. I hope the book will prove neither hard nor easy for pupils. If it is received as a straightforward story, drawing forth the earnest efforts of capable pupils and making for the success of faithful teachers, it will be a source of pleasure for the author, repaying him for many days and nights of careful study of our national history. More especially, I wish that the book may serve, along with many other excellent works of similar scope, to give to the American youth a better appreciation of the glorious history of their native land, and to create in them a warmer purpose to serve their country and promote its progress. With the hope of making the task of the teacher lighter, the chapters have been made short and an abundance of marginal headings has been introduced. On the basis of these headings complete outlines can be made by the pupils, which, when studied under the chapter headings, will give the pupil good topical grasp of the subject. Excerpt from Guide to the Study and Reading of American History Parts IV, V, and VI contain references made and classified on an entirely different basis from that of the earlier part of the work. Under one hundred and seventy-nine successive topics appear specific references to works and designated parts of works, arranged under the four captions, General, Special, Sources, and Bibliography. These references are intended to be useful to readers, students, and teachers who wish to be directed to the most convenient and most available treatment of particular subjects. In some cases, particularly in the topics on economic and social history, there is a subdivision easily understood by the user. Excerpt from An American History The history of the United States is unique in that it relates definitely to the growth of the American nation, and to the ability of this people to subdue and control the forces of natural environment. It is not a chronicle of the political and military development of a country. For this reason, it has been necessary to note specifically in this text the forces that have brought into existence this new nation. These forces are: First, the many nationalities that have helped to form this composite people; second, the European influences that have molded a tolerant and liberal-minded state; and third, the adjustment of old world civilization upon new-world environment. To this end, we find that the study of American history must include: First, the land itself; second, the relation of the European background to American history; third, the adjustment of ideals of religion, government, education, and industry to a primitive country; and fourth, the rela tions of this country in international questions. Excerpt from First Lessons in American History In this text I have told the story of America as I think it ought to be presented to beginners. Since children are always interested in the lives of the great, I have treated the subject on its biographical side. The story centers around the men who have been leaders in American life. But the book is more than a mere series of bio graphies; it is in a true sense a history of our country's growth. Excerpt from Notes on Early American History Experience and observation have shown that interest must be awakened in the early history of our country, or pupils will have a distaste for history in general; and that, if the early history of America, which is our real history, be understood and appreciated, no difficulty will arise in studying the later development of the country. A pupil who has rightly learned American history has laid a foundation for good reading and has acquired an interest in the history of other nations. Excerpt from A Text Book of American History History is a record Of events that has affected the social welfare. The record of an event is incomplete without an ex planation of its causes and effects. Interpretation is an essen tial part of history. The statement of a fact is not history, but journalism. Generalizing upon facts not themselves recited is philosophy. But history is neither journalism nor philosophy Nor is it a sum of' biographies. A biographical event ects the man's welfare. Because it is of human interest, it not therefore necessarily of historical importance. An epitome of facts, a philosophy of events, or a body of biographical details is not a history, or a school history, how ever it may be entitled. History deals with events of general human interest, tracing them in their sequence and. Order, Show ing their causes and effects. History is essentially a method Of revealing the past by finding its truth and explaining it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Literature of American History: A Bibliographical Guide This is a narrative of the chief episodes of the his tory of the Germans in this country in the colonial epoch. It is a hasty compilation, loosely thrown to gether, made after a brief study in the literature of the subject, in no sense a scientific contribution to the history of the Germans in America. The sources consulted are mentioned at the end of the book with out reference to their order of importance or publica tion. The bibliography is limited almost exclusively to American works and is even here incomplete. The style is rugged and obscure. Condensed from M. D. Learned in Am. Hist. Rev., 6: 813.
