This book is the unforgettable story of a Comanche woman who has become one of the most influential, inspired, and determined Native Americans in politics. LaDonna Harris was born on a Comanche allotment in southern Oklahoma in the 1930s. From her earliest years, she was immersed in a world of resistance, reform, and political action. As the wife of Senator Fred R. Harris, LaDonna was actively involved in political advising, campaigning, and networking. Not content to remain in the background, LaDonna became a well-known political figure in her own right, serving on the National Indian Opportunities Council as President Lyndon B. Johnson?s appointee and working beside such notable political figures as Hubert Humphrey, Robert Kennedy, and Sargent Shriver. In 1980 she became the vice-presidential nominee for the environmentalist Citizen?s Party. Her story provides a witty and valuable American Indian insider?s view of modern national political scenes.

"It's often assumed that Native Americans live in two distinct worlds: one Indian and the other white. In this collection of biographical studies of eight American Indians, though, we see that in fact they live in just one world of great complexity that has challenged, sustained, and sometimes destroyed them. Each of the leaders profiled here struck different balances between their Indian identity and their work within the dominant white cultures. Yet each attained a cultural and ethnic identity, and in describing that process these essays combine history and biography to reveal people struggling to preserve their heritage while making their own mark in life."--Back cover.

Modern American Indian life is urban, rural, and everything in-between. Lobo and Peters have compiled an unprecedented collection of innovative scholarship, poetry, prose, and stunning art--from photography and graffiti to rap and songs--that documents American Indian experiences of urban life. A pervasive rural/urban dichotomy still shapes the popular and scholarly perceptions of Native Americans, but this is a false expression of a complex and constantly changing reality. When viewed from the Native perspectives, our concepts of urbanity and approaches to American Indian studies are necessarily transformed. Courses in Native American studies, ethnic studies, anthropology, and urban studies must be in step with contemporary Indian realities. This powerful combination of pathbreaking scholarship and visual and literary arts will be enjoyed by students, scholars, and a general audience.

Excerpt from American Indian Life: By Several of Its Students At that time, during the youth of this New Englander past middle age, few anthropological monographs on Indian tribes had been written, but it is doubtful if such publications are to be found in New England village libraries even to-day, and it is more than doubt ful that if they were in the libraries anybody would read them; anthropologists themselves have been known not to read them. Be tween these forbidding monographs and the legends of Fenimore Cooper, what is there then to read for a girl who is going to spend her life among Indians or, in fact, for anyone who just wants to know more about Indians? From these considerations, among others, this book was conceived. The idea of writing about the life of the Indian for the General Reader is not novel, to be sure, to anthropologists. Appearances to the contrary, anthropologists have no wish to keep their. Science or any part of it esoteric. They are too well aware, for one thing, that facilities for the pursuit of anthropology are dependent more or less on popular interest, and that only too often tribal cultures have disappeared in America as elsewhere before people became interested enough in them to learn about them.
