It was a time of civil war and economic shift from an agrarian to an industrial society for the 1,390 speakers of state houses of representatives profiled in this unique biographical dictionary. The political climate and characteristics of the politicians as a group are surveyed in introductory material. This is followed by biographical entries which include a list of sources. The cumulated bibliography, arranged by state, is valuable. . . . There is no other such directory. Library Journal On the whole it is a useful compilation, providing a starting point for research into the lives of a cross-section of legislators in this period. . . . A necessary purchase for research libraries; recommended to all academic libraries with strong collections in state history. Choice During the years 1850-1910, the United States evolved from an agrarian to an industrial political economy. By the end of the century, industrialization has shifted the entire political system toward national government power, beginning a trend that continues today. An understanding of the importance of state government and, in particular, of the lower houses of the legislatures at this time is crucial to an understanding of how American politics was transformed in the second half of the nineteenth century. This study compares the speakers of these influential nineteenth-century American political bodies and focuses on the legislative issues of the period. The largest collection of biographical data of its kind to date, the book profiles the 1,390 speakers in the period from 1850 to 1910. The collective career analysis of the individuals covered provides an unprecedented exploration of the socioeconomic issues, the governmental processes, and the political behavior of the times to allow a more thorough understanding of the transition from an agrarian to an industrial state. This comprehensive study of state political power will provide fresh insight into the American legislative system of the latter half of the nineteenth century and will be of special value to scholars of American political history and political science.

The Rise Of The States written by Jon C. Teaford and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-05-03 with History categories.

In The Rise of the States, noted urban historian Jon C. Teaford explores the development of state government in the United States from the end of the nineteenth century to the so-called renaissance of states at the end of the twentieth. Arguing that state governments were not lethargic backwaters that suddenly stirred to life in the 1980s, Teaford shows instead how state governments were continually adapting and expanding throughout the past century. While previous historical scholarship focused on the states, if at all, as retrograde relics of simpler times, Teaford describes how states actively assumed new responsibilities, developed new sources of revenue, and created new institutions. Teaford examines the evolution of the structure, function, and finances of state government during the Progressive Era, the 1920s, the Great Depression, the post–World War II years, and the post–reapportionment era beginning in the late 1960s. State governments, he explains, played an active role not only in the creation, governance, and management of the political units that made up the state but also in dealing with the growth of business, industries, and education. Not all states chose the same solutions to common problems. For Teaford, the diversity of responses points to the growing vitality and maturity of state governments as the twentieth century unfolded.

The Star That Set written by Samuel B. Hand and has been published by Lexington Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with History categories.

For over a century, from 1854, the year the party was organized, until 1958, Vermonters never failed to elect Republicans to its state and national offices, and every four years they returned a slate of electors pledged to the Republican presidential nominee. The Vermont GOP was trumpeted as the star that never set in the Republican Party's political firmament, until the decline of family farms and the influx of Democrat-leaning urbanites in the 1960s and 1970s eroded the bedrock of Vermont's GOP base. Encompassing the years 1854 to 1974, Samuel Hand's superb historical study documents the rise and fall of Vermont republicanism, exploring the personalities and the religious, political, and social institutions that constituted the Vermont Republican Party. More than simply the authoritative telling of a remarkable century of hegemony for the Vermont GOP, The Star That Set is a compelling story of the waning importance of party in modern American political life.
