Excerpt from American Painters of Yesterday and Today I do not wish to convey the impression of being insensible to the merits of the large canvases - they are too obvious to permit of their being overlooked by anyone who is at all sensitive to what is most truly beautiful in contemporary American landscape art. In suggesting minor faults which one finds in some, I do not mean to imply that they are common evenin the large canvases or that the smaller pictures which I have chosen to write about here are faultless. However, any inaccuracy in interpretation in a land scape of considerable dimensions is, simply because it involves so much in the way of mere representation, seemingly exaggerated, while a similar defect in a small painting is less likely to be discovered except as one studies it closely. I am not sure either that it is not true that in working a painter senses an inaccurate rendering in a small picture more often than in a large canvas, in the elaboration of which he is absorbed by subtleties of mood and emotion rather than by problems of actiial representation. Thus Murphy's miniature landscapes have, I believe, a more definite aspect of reality while his larger pic tures appeal to us more particularly because of their successful embodiment of spiritual values. American Art In Asia written by Michelle Lim and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-05 with Art categories.

This book challenges existing notions of what is "American" and/or "Asian" art, moving beyond the identity issues that have dominated art-world conversations of the 1980s and the 1990s and aligning with new trends and issues in contemporary art today, e.g. the Global South, labor, environment, and gender identity. Contributors examine both historical and contemporary instances in art practices and exhibition-making under the rubric of "American art in Asia." The book complicates existing notions of what constitutes American art, Asian American (and American Asian) art. As today’s production and display of contemporary art takes place across diffused borders, under the fluid conditions of a globalized art world since transformed by the COVID-19 pandemic, new contexts and art historical narratives are forming that upend traditional Euro-American mappings of center-margins, migratory patterns and community engagement. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, American studies, Asian studies and visual culture.
