Despite being warned that there might be bad guys in the high mountains of western China where she was heading, Ruth boarded a ship bound for China. Ruth decided that carrying enough bamboo for a Panda to eat on a return trip to America would be difficult, so she decided to look for a baby Panda. People laughed. "Even if you find a baby, how will you feed it? You are not a mother Panda." Ruth bought a baby bottle and some dried milk. Now how to get to the area where Pandas live? A friend introduced her to a Chinese man whose 'English' name was Quentin. He knew where Pandas lived and agreed to show her the way. For days and days they climbed steep rocks, waded through cold creeks, and crawled through thick bushes that scratched their faces. Suddenly Quentin stopped. He heard something crying. Inside a hollow tree was a very hungry baby Panda. They waited for the mother Panda to show up, but she did not. Finally, they took the small furry baby to their campsite, built a fire, warmed some milk, and fed her. She promptly fell asleep. Ruth returned to Shanghai, where she and the baby Panda boarded a ship for America. Such excitement when "America's First Panda" arrived. The newspapers called it "Panda-monium!"
