Excerpt from American Portraits, 1875-1900 To the complications which peculiarly affect work on contemporaries must be joined an increasing sense of the difficulty of accomplishing the portrayal of souls at all. More than ever I feel that such portrayal, at least as I can perform it, has no final value. Souls tremble and shift and fade under the touch. They elude and evade and mock you, fool you with false lights and perplex you with impenetrable shadows, till you are almost ready to give up in despair any effort to interpret them. But you cannot give it up; for there is no artistic effort more fascinating and no study so completely inexhaustible. If the substance on which we have to found spiritual interpretation could be relied on, we might have more confidence in the superstructure. But the further we go, the more our confidence is shaken. Take one special form of material, the report of words and conversations. All historians and biographers use such report, are tempted to use it much more than they do. Yet how abominably uncertain it is and must be. Who of uscan remember for an hour the exact words he himself used, even important words, significant words? Much more, who can remember such words of any one else? Yet diarists and biographers will go home and set down at the end of a long evening, or perhaps a day or two later, elaborate phrases which the alleged speaker may have used, and much more likely may not. And this, when the turn of a sentence may alter the light on a man's soul! Of such materials is biography made. I should not wish any one to have more confidence in mine, at least, than I have myself. I desire to acknowledge generally the courtesy and helpfulness of many correspondents who have offered useful suggestions and corrected errors. And for the Opportunity of profiting by these, I must chiefly thank the editor of the Atlantic Monthly whose steady and cordial support and sympathy enable me to prosecute my work with an enthusiasm which I could hardly draw from any other source. President Garfield written by CW Goodyear and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-09 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

An “ambitious, thorough, supremely researched” (The Washington Post) biography of the extraordinary, tragic life of America’s twentieth president—James Garfield. In “the most comprehensive Garfield biography in almost fifty years” (The Wall Street Journal), C.W. Goodyear charts the life and times of one of the most remarkable Americans ever to win the Presidency. Progressive firebrand and conservative compromiser; Union war hero and founder of the first Department of Education; Supreme Court attorney and abolitionist preacher; mathematician and canalman; crooked election-fixed and clean-government champion; Congressional chieftain and gentleman-farmer; the last president to be born in a log cabin; the second to be assassinated. James Abram Garfield was all these things and more. Over nearly two decades in Congress during a polarized era—Reconstruction and the Gilded Age—Garfield served as a peacemaker in a Republican Party and America defined by divisions. He was elected to overcome them. He was killed while trying to do so. President Garfield is American history at its finest. It is about an impoverished boy working his way from the frontier to the Presidency; a progressive statesman, trying to raise a more righteous, peaceful Republic out of the ashes of civil war; the tragically imperfect course of that reformation, and the man himself; a martyr-President, whose death succeeded in nudging the country back to cleaner, calmer politics.

Mystic Chords of Memory "Illustrated with hundreds of well-chosen anecdotes and minute observations . . . Kammen is a demon researcher who seems to have mined his nuggets from the entire corpus of American cultural history . . . insightful and sardonic." —Washington Post Book World In this ground-breaking, panoramic work of American cultural history, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Machine That Would Go of Itself examines a central paradox of our national identity How did "the land of the future" acquire a past? And to what extent has our collective memory of that past—as embodied in our traditions—have been distorted, or even manufactured? Ranging from John Adams to Ronald Reagan, from the origins of Independence Day celebrations to the controversies surrounding the Vietnam War Memorial, from the Daughters of the American Revolution to immigrant associations, and filled with incisive analyses of such phenonema as Americana and its collectors, "historic" villages and Disneyland, Mystic Chords of Memory is a brilliant, immensely readable, and enormously important book. "Fascinating . . . a subtle and teeming narrative . . . masterly." —Time "This is a big, ambitious book, and Kammen pulls it off admirably. . . . [He] brings a prodigious mind and much scholarly rigor to his task . . . an importnat book—and a revealing look at how Americans look at themselves." —Milwaukee Journal
