Chapters: Parks and Recreation, The Office (U.S. TV series), The Simpsons, South Park, 30 Rock, Friends, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, M*A*S*H (TV series), Cheers, How I Met Your Mother, Scrubs (TV series), I Love Lucy, Seinfeld, Cybill, All in the Family, The Suite Life on Deck, Leave It to Beaver, The Honeymooners, Hogan's Heroes, Arrested Development (TV series). Excerpt: Parks and Recreation is an American comedy television series on the NBC television network, led by Amy Poehler, who stars as Leslie Knope, a perky, mid-level bureaucrat in the parks department of Pawnee, a fictional town in Indiana. It was conceived by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur and debuted on April 9, 2009. The show has run for four seasons and a fifth has been commissioned for the 2012/13 season. It uses a single-camera, mockumentary filming style, with the implication being that a documentary crew is filming everyone. More recently, the Parks and Recreation staff has tried to differentiate their show from The Office through differences in filming technique, and decided in favor of multiple camera angles and frequent jump cuts. The writers researched local California politics for the show, and consulted with urban planners and elected officials. The Leslie Knope character underwent minor changes after the first season in response to audience feedback that she seemed unintelligent and "ditzy." The writing staff tried to incorporate current events into their episodes, such as a government shutdown in Pawnee inspired by the real-life global financial crisis. Several guest stars have been featured in the show, and these characters often appear in multiple episodes. Parks and Recreation received generally mixed to negative reviews during its first season; many critics saw it as too similar to The Office. However, after a reapproach to its...

Welcome to Pawnee: First in Friendship, Fourth in Obesity. Let Leslie Knope (as played by Amy Poehler on NBC's hit show Parks and Recreation) take you on a hilarious tour through her hometown, the Midwestern haven known as Pawnee, Indiana. Meet the city's colorful citizens, like much-loved public servant and man of nature Ron Swanson; learn about industrial giants such as Sweetums and the Kernston's Rubber Nipple factory; and explore hopping nightlife venues such as the Snake Hole, or indulge in the greatest waffles in the world at JJ's Diner (specialty meal: The Four Horse-Meals of the Egg-Pork-alypse). The book also delves into Pawnee's rich and varied history, including the time the whole town was on fire, or when that cult that took over in the 1970s, and how we overcame decades of conflict with (and some unfortunate massacres of) the Wamapoke Indians to live in harmony. Everything's definitely totally cool with them now. Packed with laugh-out-loud photographs, illustrations, and commentary by all the characters from the show, Pawnee is a must-read that will make you enjoy every moment of your stay in the Greatest Town in America.

In the midst of the Great Depression, Americans were nearly universally literate--and they were hungry for the written word. With an eye to this market and as a response to unemployment, Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration created the Federal Writers' Project. They produced the Project's American Guides, an impressively produced series that set out not only to direct travelers on which routes to take and what to see throughout the country, but also to celebrate the distinctive characteristics of each individual state. The series unintentionally diversified American literary culture's cast of characters--promoting women, minority, and rural writers--while it also institutionalized the innovative idea that American culture comes in state-shaped boxes.
