This study focuses on influential, commercially successful post-World War II recording artists. It highlights singer-songwriters who ignored the popularity of Tin Pan Alley ditties in favor of their own tunes. It also emphasizes the reality of commercial isolation caused by racial segregation and cultural isolation imposed by the hillbilly twang. Fortunately, these circumstances didn't undermine the musical genius of singer-songwriters like Roy Acuff, Big Bill Broonzy, Al Dexter, Red Foley, Amos Milburn, T-Bone Walker, or Hank Williams. This study also stresses the creative verve of those singer-songwriters who helped launch rock 'n' roll at mid-century. These energetic, innovative performers include Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, and Carl Perkins. It seems more than reasonable that the dawn of the American singer-songwriter era should be traced back to 1944. The two decades that followed established the composing/performing foundation for the powerful figures of the sixties, seventies, and eighties.

Nashville City Blues written by James Talley and has been published by University of Oklahoma Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-03-09 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

For many diehard music fans and critics, Oklahoma-born James Talley ranks among the finest of American singer-songwriters. Talley’s unique style—a blend of folk, country, blues, and social commentary—draws comparisons with the likes of Woody Guthrie, Merle Haggard, and Johnny Cash. In this engaging, down-to-earth memoir, Talley recalls the highs and lows of his nearly fifty-year career in country music. Talley’s story begins in the hardscrabble towns of eastern Oklahoma. As a young man, he witnessed poverty and despair and worked alongside ordinary Americans who struggled to make ends meet. He has never forgotten his Oklahoma roots. These experiences shaped Talley’s artistic vision and inspired him to write his own songs. Eventually Talley landed in Nashville, where his first years included exciting brushes with fame but also bitter disappointments. As an early champion of social justice causes, his ideals did not fit neatly into Nashville’s star-making machine. By his own admission, Talley at times made poor business decisions and trusted the wrong people. His relationship with the country music industry was—and still is—fraught, but he makes no apology for staying true to his core principles. Nashville City Blues offers hard-won wisdom for any aspiring artist motivated to work hard and handle whatever setbacks might follow. Readers will also gain valuable understanding about the country music industry and the inescapable links between commerce and artistry.

The Singer Songwriter In Europe written by Isabelle Marc and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-22 with Music categories.

The Singer-Songwriter in Europe is the first book to explore and compare the multifaceted discourses and practices of this figure within and across linguistic spaces in Europe and in dialogue with spaces beyond continental borders. The concept of the singer-songwriter is significant and much-debated for a variety of reasons. Many such musicians possess large and zealous followings, their output often esteemed politically and usually held up as the nearest popular music gets to high art, such facets often yielding sizeable economic benefits. Yet this figure, per se, has been the object of scant critical discussion, with individual practitioners celebrated for their isolated achievements instead. In response to this lack of critical knowledge, this volume identifies and interrogates the musical, linguistic, social and ideological elements that configure the singer-songwriter and its various equivalents in Europe, such as the French auteur-compositeur-interprète and the Italian cantautore, since the late 1940s. Particular attention is paid to the emergence of this figure in the post-war period, how and why its contours have changed over time and space subsequently, cross-cultural influences, and the transformative agency of this figure as regards party and identity politics in lyrics and music, often by means of individual case studies. The book's polycentric approach endeavours to redress the hitherto Anglophone bias in scholarship on the singer-songwriter in the English-speaking world, drawing on the knowledge of scholars from across Europe and from a variety of academic disciplines, including modern language studies, musicology, sociology, literary studies and history.
