Treat Addiction. Save Lives is the first published account of the history of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Since 1954, a group of dedicated physicians and their successors have created a cohesive medical society now known as ASAM. ASAM's history begins in 1941 with Ruth Fox, MD, reading an article in the Saturday Evening Post about a new self-help group for people with alcoholism: Alcoholics Anonymous. Intrigued, Fox attended an AA meeting at which she met Marty Mann, who was in recovery and somewhat an anomaly as a woman in the then predominantly male AA. The rest, as they say, is history. The fateful meeting between these two pioneering women, Fox and Mann, would ultimately lead to the creation in 1944 of the National Committee for Education on Alcoholism (NCEA) and in 1954 of the New York City Medical Society on Alcoholism (NYCMSA). From there, the book traces the early roots of what would become ASAM through its many iterations: from the American Medical Society on Alcoholism (AMSA) in 1967 to the American Medical Society on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies (AMSAODD) in 1985 and ultimately to today's ASAM in 1989. Intertwined in the creation story of the national society are many state and local threads, woven by the various combinations and permutations of the regional chapters and notable individuals who have shaped the field of addiction medicine as it is known today.ASAM's paramount goal has always been to help people with addictive disorders live better, richer, and more satisfying lives. ASAM has been influenced by and made a significant impact on the external environment from the time it was founded. It has played a significant role in ensuring addiction medicine is recognized by professional organizations, government, physicians, and consumers of healthcare services, and the general public. In October 2015, the recognition of addiction medicine as a medical sub-specialty, which was ASAM's mission for decades, conveys the Society's vital role in the broader field of Medicine.
