This report from the United States Surgeon General is the result of a review of the scientific literature and analyses of new data relating to youth violence. It identifies and quantifies factors, in particular settings of combinations, that increase the probability that violence will occur. It also presents an array of interventions of well-documented effectiveness in helping young people whose lives are already marked by a propensity for violence as well as in preventing others from viewing violence as a solution to needs, wants, or problems. This report is divided into six chapters. The first serves as an introduction and offers chapter conclusions for chapters two through five. Those chapters discuss the magnitude of youth violence; the developmental dynamics of youth violence; risk factors for youth violence; and prevention and intervention. The final chapter examines a vision for the future. Each chapter includes a list of references. The executive summary of this report is included in a separate booklet. (Contains an index.) (MKA)

American Juvenile Justice is a definitive volume for courses on the criminology and policy analysis of adolescence. The focus is on the principles and policy of a separate and distinct system of juvenile justice. The book opens with an introduction of the creation of adolescence, presenting a justification for the category of the juvenile or a period of partial responsibility before full adulthood. Subsequent sections include empirical investigations of the nature of youth criminality and legal policy toward youth crime. At the heart of the book is an argument for a penal policy that recognizes diminished responsibility and a youth policy that emphasizes the benefits of letting the maturing process continue with minimal interruption. In this updated and expanded second edition, Zimring has included four new chapters with examinations on important topics including, US Supreme Court decisions of life sentences for minors, the elected use of juvenile courts over criminal court, punitive sex offender registration for juveniles, and appropriate tactics for juvenile justice reform.

"A powerful and important book that explains the epidemic rise and complex underlying causes of youth violence, and opens a discussion on strategies to protect our children from physical and emotional harm." Our children are our future. Yet every day, new reports come in describing violent assaults against youths, or dramatic increases in gang recruitment of teens, or the terrible, hostile environments children are forced to grow up in. Teen Violence in America is a careful examination of the causes of this epidemic rise in youth violence. But more than that, it opens a discussion on strategies that have been proven most effective for protecting our children from physical and emotional harm. Each of us has a responsibility to do all we can to ensure that children are raised happy, healthy and emotionally whole. Change is needed, as is a renewed commitment to our youth—and the only way that can happen is if we understand the dangers our children face in their daily lives. Teen Violence in America identifies those circumstances that place youths at risk for violent behavior, what ignites this predilection into violent action, and identifies strategies that can be employed to mitigate the damage and put them on a positive life track. From family life to school environment and opportunities, cultural and political influences, drugs and gangs, Teen Violence in America looks deeply into the different factors contributing to this epidemic.
