Mai departe, n-am o soluţie." - Andrei Cornea Ținea minte perfect (sau așa credea) ce fusese înainte, dar, când era vorba despre ce se întâmplase după, anii i se învălmășeau în cap și totul plutea într-un fel de negură, care anihila limitele lunilor și anilor. A fost mult, a fost puțin – parcă totul nu fusese decât un pe urmă prelungit luni și ani de zile. Un provizorat, o tranziție (spre ce?), o trecere spre altă viață (care?); așa că, deși unele detalii îi erau clare, întregul, sensul general al mișcării rămâneau obscure. Pesemne că totul se schimba prea repede; lucrurile vechi piereau pe neașteptate, oameniise îmbrăcau mereu altfel, arătau altfel (mai ales femeile), casele vechi erau dărâmate sau revopsite, străzile căpătau mereu alte nume, se puneau alte afișe și alte semne de circulație; până și bordurile trotuarelor le schimbau frenetic. Apăreau mereu trenuri noi, mașini noi, telefoane noi, ziare noi, tâmpenii noi și mai ales oameni noi care pățeau țanțoși, enervanți, nestingheriți de trecut. Iar de felul adevărat de viață de dinainte își aminteau tot mai puțini. Lumea citea cu nesaț ziarele, se uita la noile tele-ecrane și comenta tot felul de noutăți, scandaluri, crime, filme, dive, sport, jafuri, șomaj, bătăi, revolte, greve, dar despre ce făcuse sau ce fusese fiecare înainte nimeni nu voia să vorbească ori pretindea cu seninătate că nu ținea minte, sau chiar că lucrurile fuseseră cu totul altfel decât știa el bine că fuseseră. Fiindcă el chiar știa.

Excepția care suntem, într‑un sens, tot ea e și regula, într‑alt sens; trăim, fără îndoială, ca făpturi «de‑o zi» și ca «visul unei umbre», cum suna versul lui Pindar, dar, oricât de rar, iată‑ne uneori și în rolul torței care iluminează o clipă întregul și‑i furnizează etalonul măreției. Diary of a Short-Sighted Adolescent was written by the young Mircea Eliade - one of Romania's greatest writers and intellectuals. The book can be viewed as an early 20th century 'Catcher in the Rye', and allows us an intimate view of the developing genius, whose literary output has been neglected in the English language for too lon.
