"Ammonia emissions is an important topic in many countries with animal production, since it contributes to environmental and health problems. Strategies and measures to reduce ammonia emission are getting increasing attention in national and international legislation. This book aims to bring together visions and knowledge from scientists, policy makers and other relevant stakeholders around the subject of NH3 emissions from agricultural operations and its reduction options. It also offers a basis for international harmonization on various NH3 emission related topics (e.g. national emission inventories, measurement techniques and strategies, data on emissions and reductions) and, last but not least, it provides an update of science concerning NH3 and related environmental issues. The focus of this publication is on NH3 emissions from various agricultural sources (grazing, animal housing, manure storage, land application of manures), and the options for their reduction in a farm system approach. The time when agricultural production activities were considered neutral to the environment has definitely passed. For last 25 years there has been growing scientific evidence on the potentially deteriorating effect of ammonia released in the process of agricultural production on the environment. In the last 15 years additional focus has been given to environmental and health impact of dust and VOC’s generated by farming activities. Only very recently is the contribution of agricultural production GHG’s to global warming recognised. In the book the various aspects of agricultural emissions are discussed. Its first part refers mainly to introductory, theoretical, and methodological issues. The second part gives the most recent data on national emissions, particularly these of Nitrogen species in selected individual European countries and the projections of their emission for all Europe. The third part which deals exclusively with ammonia brings comprehensive survey of its emission abatement potentials, the cost of appropriate actions and the difficulties in their practical implementation. It also considers the potential side effects of ammonia emission abatement measures.

As levels of other air pollutants have declined, ammonia emissions in the UK have been rising since 2013, with significant implications for ecosystems and human health. The main source of ammonia is agriculture, where it is released from manure and slurry and through the application of manmade fertiliser. The agricultural sector produced 82 per cent of all UK ammonia emissions in 2016. Our review and synthesis of the evidence suggests that the impacts of ammonia on biodiversity can be significant, with certain species and habitats, such as bog and peatland, particularly susceptible. Putting together the costs of this biodiversity loss with the costs to human health and projected emissions, the impact of ammonia emissions in the UK could be equivalent to costs of over £700 million per year by 2020. Many interventions exist to address ammonia emissions from agriculture, though their level of implementation at present is mixed. Policy options to support wider implementation of emission reduction measures are likely to include a mix of regulation, incentives, and education.

Emissions from agricultural activities, both crop and animal, are known to contain gaseous ammonia (NH3) which through chemical reaction in rainwater changes into ammonium ion (NH4+). Using wet deposition data of ammonium from several National Atmospheric Deposition Program/National Trends Network (NADPD TN) and Clean Air Status Trends Network (CASTNet) sites, as well as calculated ammonia emissions from North Carolina and the Southeast and Midwest regions of the United States, trends in ammonium concentrations in precipitation were analyzed for the period of 1983-2004. In addition, HYSPLIT back-trajectory model was used to determine that when ambient air in downwind sites arrived from the high ammonia emissions source region, ammonium concentrations in precipitation were enhanced. For the Southeast United States domain, analysis shows that NH4+ concentrations generally increased with increasing NH3 emissions from within the same region. Similar analysis has been performed over the Midwest United States and compared to the results from the Southeast United States. Emissions from the Midwest are attributed to larger animals, including hogs and cattle, whereas the Southeast has a higher percentage of emissions coming from smaller livestock, such as chickens. In addition, the Midwest United States region has a much more uniform spatial distribution of emissions. The conversion of ammonia gas (NH3) into ammonium ion (NH4+) is a fundamental process that is of great environmental significance. Excessive amounts of NH4+ can lead to acidification of soils and other pollution problems. An agricultural ammonia emissions inventory for the Midwest United States and Southeast United States was developed using data from the United States Department of Agriculture 2002 Census. This inventory indicates total annual ammonia emissions to be nearly the same over the two regions, with 1417 X 106 kg NH3D m2D ear over the Southeastern United States and 1691 X 106 kg NH3.
