“[A] certifiable masterpiece” from the acclaimed chronicler of New York City’s old money elite (The New York Observer). Widely considered Louis Auchincloss’s greatest novel, The Rector of Justin is an astute dissection of the social mores of the Northeast’s privileged establishment. The story centers on Rev. Frank Prescott, the charismatic founder and rector of a prestigious Episcopal school for boys. With laser-sharp insight, Auchincloss delivers a prismatic portrait of this commanding and complicated man through the eyes of those who knew—or thought they knew—him best. Seamlessly interweaving multiple points of view—from an adoring teacher to that of a rebellious daughter—The Rector of Justin presents a social history of the eighty years of his life: the sources of his virtues and failings, his successes, his love, and his crises of faith. As Jonathan Yardley put it in the Washington Post, “Auchincloss is one of the most accomplished and distinctive writers this country has known . . . [and] Frank Prescott is one of the great characters in American fiction.” “A daring and ambitious book . . . Its poise and taste and intelligence strike one on every page, as do its unerring knowledge and literary skill.” —The New Yorker “[The Rector of Justin] should sit on the shelf of any serious reader of American fiction.” —Jay Parini, The New York Observer “A taut and elegant study of a distinguished American whose closest friends cannot decide whether they like or detest him.” —The Times Literary Supplement “Fascinating . . . We do come to feel the reality, the complicated reality, of Francis Prescott.” —Saturday Review “My favorite of Auchincloss’s novels. Both decadent and demanding, high-hat and frank . . . A subversive in lace-up oxfords and rep tie.” —Amy Bloom

Don Celestino is old and bitter and afraid, an impossible man. An anarchist who has been in exile from his native Spain for more than twenty years, he lives with his daughter in Paris, but in his mind he is still fighting the Spanish Civil War. He fulminates against the daily papers; he brags about his past exploits. He has become bigoted, self-important, and obsessed; a bully to his fellow exiles and a tyrant to his daughter, Pascualita. Then a family member dies in Madrid and there is an inheritance to sort out. Pascualita wants to go to Spain, which is supposedly opening up in response to the 1960s, and Don Celestino feels he has no choice but to follow. He is full of dread and desire, foreseeing a heroic last confrontation with his enemies, but what he encounters instead is a new commercialized Spain that has no time for the past, much less for him. Or so it seems. Because the last act of Don Celestino’s dizzying personal drama will prove that though “there is nothing serious . . . , there is tragedy.” An astonishing modern take on Don Quixote, Chaos and Night untangles the ties between politics and paranoia, self-loathing and self-pity, rage and remorse. It is the darkly funny final flowering of the art of Henry de Montherlant, a solitary and scarifying modern master whose work, admired by Graham Greene and Albert Camus, is sure to appeal to contemporary readers of Thomas Bernhard and Roberto Bolaño.

From the Preface. This compilation was suggested by Mrs. Carrie Stein Ledjard, of the Department of Modern Languages of the College of Agriculture, University of the Philippines. It seems to afford to the Filipino student of French essential rules clearly presented and varied reading involving a particularly wide and useful vocabulary. The subject matter is much more entertaining than the customary contents of such textbooks, and, besides, there is the inspiration and interest which attaches to its being the work of the Philippines' great hero. The first articles, or about half the material, are from a Rizal notebook recently brought to light, and were published in the magazine "Cultura Filipina" by the well known historical student, Hon. Epifanio de los Santos. The latter portion is from the so-called "Clinical notebook", which is in the Ayer Collection in Chicago, and the copy was made by Dr. Jose P. Bantug, now of the Philippines General Hospital, a zealous and active member of the Rizal Association formed by Filipino students who went to the States. The facsimiles, on pages 5 and 6, of Rizal's handwriting in French, English and German show his facility in those language, and the letter from which the two pages were reproduced had a rather curious history. During Dr. Rizal's deportation in Dapitan, from 1892 to 1896, all his correspondence was read by his "jailer", the military commandant in whose custody he was. This censorship at one time became so critical making the most stupid eliminations from his letters to and from friends, that the exile wrote the following tri-lingual letter to return some of the annoyance he had experienced. No one of the censors understood more than a single other European language beside his native Spanish so that it was necessary to send the suspicious letter to three different persons before its inoffensiveness was officially established. French, German and English had been the languages in which Rizal had made his higher studies, and they came as easily to his tongue or pen as did Spanish.

The stories in 334 revolve loosely around a government housing project at 334 East 11th Street in New York City in the 2020s. The project's inhabitants are universally poor, often jobless, sometimes squalid. Some are happy, others angry, depressed, or just numb. The stories study their hopes and disappointments, and all are deeply introspective.
