In this fascinating biography, art historian Yashodhara Dalmia paints a compelling portrait of the artist who, when she died in 1941 at the age of twenty-eight, left behind a body of work that establishes her as one of the foremost artists of the century and an eloquent symbol of the fusion between the East and the West

One of the world's most ancient cultures, India can be understood and explained in as many ways as humans can possibly devise. To make sense of this astonishing turmoil of ideas, Sunil Khilnani has created a remarkably simple and attractive solution. In this book (which accompanies a major Radio 4 series which he is narrating) he takes the lives of 50 Indians, starting with the Buddha, some very famous, some more obscure, from the earliest records to the present day, and in a series of short chapters describes what makes them so surprising, curious or important. These are not simply history lessons, but stories rooted in today's India, as Khilnani goes on a quest across contemporary India to find the living traces of these extraordinary individuals.

Re Take Of Amrita written by Vivan Sundaram and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Photography, Artistic categories.

Re-take of 'Amrita' is a book of 38 digital photomontages by Vivan Sundaram, with a preface and annotation by the artist-author. These montages are the result of a collaborative photographic project: between Umrao Singh Sher-Gil (1870-1954), the 'essential' photographer (who took numerous self-portraits), and Vivan Sundaram, who orchestrates with a digital wand, archival photographs of the Sher-Gil family. Vivan enters the space of the Sher-Gil homes and makes the members of the family enact (and re-enact) moments of radiating desire under his direction. The 'encounters' generated in this process of re-casting the family in new roles elaborate into a fictional narrative. The central axis of the cinematic plot is the relationship between the father, Umrao Singh and the artist-daughter, Amrita (1913-41).Vivan Sundaram was born in Shimla in 1943. He studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, MS University of Baroda, and at The Slade School, London, in the 1960s. He returned to India in 1970 and continued his painting. Since 1990 he has turned to making artworks as sculpture, installation, photography and video. Vivan, himself a member of the Sher-Gil family, has been engaged with the Sher-Gil project over a thirty-year period, as curator, editor, archivist. Re-take of 'Amrita', a series of digital photomontages made in 2001, has been exhibited in museums and galleries in India and abroad. Vivan has also collaborated with Kumar Shahani on the script for a proposed film on Amrita Sher-Gil.Revelling in the multitude of meanings inherent in his digitalized photomontages and his writing, the artist assembles his cast of characters, all close family members, each one singled out for his or her unique history, and repositions them in a fictive composition. The design and layout certainly culls from the best traditions of art book publications. The Art News Magazine of India

Eclecticism seems to be one of the most recognized features of Chris Marker's work. He is often presented as a filmmaker and a photographer, a poet, a translator, a cartoonist, a visual artist, an editor, a software designer and a television and video director. Given the 50 years since the release of his most well-known film, La Jetée (1963), this volume fosters discussion of the intertwining of photography and cinema within a framework that analyses Marker's influence in film and photography's scholarship. In the last ten years, many books have been published on the subjects of photography and.

'Remarkable and compelling. I loved this book' EDMUND DE WAAL 'An exemplary sleuth, both astute and open-minded . . . Manera Sambuy writes with impassioned style and insight' TELEGRAPH A lost princess and a vanished world: a remarkable true story that moves from the Punjab of the Raj to 1930s Paris and the cataclysm of the Second World War On a sweltering day in 2007, Italian writer Livia Manera Sambuy encounters a photograph of Princess Amrit Kaur in a Mumbai museum. The picture is arresting, gorgeous - but the caption will change Livia's life forever. It claims that the Punjabi princess sold her jewels in occupied Paris to save Jewish lives, only to be arrested by the Gestapo and sent to a concentration camp where she died within a year. It's a sensational story - and for Livia, the beginning of a compulsive search for the truth as she delves into the history of the British Raj, the diamonds and sapphires of the twentieth-century aristocracy, and the lives of extraordinary figures: bankers, jewellers, explorers and spies. Past and present converge when Livia travels to meet Bubbles, the princess's daughter, now in her eighties. Striving to reconnect Bubbles with the elusive woman who abandoned her in 1933, Livia unearths a strange and complicated family history; one that diverges unexpectedly from the story that she set out to uncover. Filled with glamour and terror, beauty and sorrow, In Search of Amrit Kaur is an engrossing detective story, a kaleidoscopic history lesson, and a moving portrait of mothers, lovers and daughters across the century, seeking personal freedom. * WINNER OF THE CAPALBIO PIAZZA MAGENTA LITERARY PRIZE 2023 *
