"Commerce of Lisbon, with the Markets of Western-Africa, in the Year 1803: The Trade carried on with the African settlements, is always in our [Portugal] favour, the balance being for us, as may be seen by the balance from 1796, up to the present time. It ought nevertheless to be observed, that a real entry is wanting from Angola, Bissao, and Cacheu, in consequence of these places carrying on their Slave Trade through Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, and Maranham, from whence some articles are received, such as ivory, wax, &c. without any distinction having been made of them.
