Discover the real story behind the Christmas story. You and your family can discover the big picture of the Bible through this eye-opening, daily reading. Families want Christmas to be more spiritual and less commercial--more about Jesus and less about Santa. We also want to connect Christmas with the Bible. Sure, we read the "Christmas story" from the Gospels, but there's so much more to discover. For Christians, the word "Advent" means the arrival of a notable person. And this arrival was actually foretold 6,000 years ago, in Genesis 3:15.What happens to the Seed between Eden and the arrival in Bethlehem? You and your family can follow this Advent Journey in December, and explore how 64 generations (64 families) prepared for the arrival of Jesus."Many believers think they know all about the Christmas story, but I love this resource because it shows that God's miraculous plan began before Genesis. An eye-opening read that will bring a deeper appreciation for the season." --Dr. Alex Himaya, senior pastor of BattleCreek Church

For hundreds of years it was quiet. Silence that I'm sure was deafening for those that longed to hear God's voice, and to others the silence may have seemed like permission to think and do whatever they wanted to think and do. Either way, the tension of this silence was getting tighter and the longing and aching of the human heart was becoming louder. Soon, but not soon enough, the Word, God, would become skin, muscle and bone and live amongst us, showing us the glory of the Father and his deep love for the human heart. God, the symphony, full of complexity, movement, beauty and power, and infinite in His being, would become a song that we could all hear and see and sing, a folk song, intimate, close, and our hearts would burn inside us. But those before us would have to stand in an unbearable tension. As the human heart cried out for light to break into the dark the fullness of time had come, and God sent His son, born from a woman to buy back the human heart from its varying slaveries, so that we could be named by God alone as sons and daughters adopted and chosen in Christ. God stepped out of heaven and became a vulnerable breakable baby to push back the darkness of the world and call us out of the darkness into an unfathomable light. This gospel must be recalled over and over. We have short memories and are easily distracted with shine and glitter. So we must spend weekly, monthly and yearly rhythms reminding ourselves and each of the of the gospel of Jesus, the power to save. We do this in moments by spending individual time with God, becoming vulnerable to the voice and presence of God in the scriptures. We do this weekly when we gather with the people of God and proclaim again the benefits of feasting on God and forsaking the worlds malnutrition. We also do this "gospel recalling" through the Church Calendar. The most simple way to explain this calendar is to see it as a yearly cycle. Advent is the season we recall longing for a Savior. Christmas is the celebration of the arrival of that Savior. Lent is the journey to the cross and death of that Savior. Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. Pentecost is the moment the Holy Spirit comes and Jesus builds His church in daily massive conversion. The church calendar is one more way to help our scattered minds remember, recall, and renew our love for Gods massive rescue plan. So here we stand in this Advent season, longing for a Savior we know will come. It's not too difficult for many of us to already sense that longing even though the work of Jesus is complete. We stand in a new tension between the rebel feast and the wedding feast. Jesus' work is done, but the Kingdom of God has not yet fully come. This season I want to invite anyone and everyone to journey with us through four weeks of Advent. Step inside the quiet, the longing, the expectation and finally the great fulfillment. It's a little like holding your breath for a long time, waiting to exhale. If you are a human who is quite as broken as I, it becomes such a fresh and marvelous way to approach Christmas. The wide-eyed, jaw dropping, heart pumping miracle of God coming to us in our tattered state and giving our souls worth makes Christmas a new and unique celebration like no other! I pray each of us find the depth of meaning in each beautiful or painful moment in this Christmas season. Be present in the journey friends!

Previously published as Christmas Presence: An Advent Devotional by Ray Cummings and Scott Hanberry. Advent is a season of expectant waiting and preparation for both the celebration of the Nativity of Christ at Christmas and the return of Christ at the Second Coming. It traditionally encompasses the four Sundays leading up to Christmas and is centered around the four themes of hope, peace, love, and joy. This devotional is a little longer; it is a 41-day journey. The number 40 shows up often in the Bible, commonly in contexts dealing with judgment or testing. Forty-one often represents victory or an end to the trial or testing. The 41 series guides you past judgment to the deliverance, past the testing to the testimony. These forty-one days of Advent readings will help you and your family prepare your hearts for the celebration of Christ''s Nativity and the anticipation of His Return! For Christians all around the world, Advent is a season of waiting. Individually and collectively we wait for the day to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Advent is clearly tied to the coming of Christ, but what if we began to see more than just a celebration of Christmas, "The First Advent"... What if we anchored our hope in a future glance? Yes, we look forward to Christmas as a reminder of Christ''s first coming in the manger in Bethlehem, but few Christians invest mental energy in anticipation of His second coming in the clouds as the judge of the world. The word advent itself means "arrival" or "an appearing or coming into place." And so this season of Advent should be a time when we also wait with great anticipation for the ultimate arrival: Jesus'' Second Coming! His arrival at Bethlehem changed everything and His promise of return secures our hope. In this time of waiting the experience might be different from household to household and believer to believer. For some, Advent is an experience of joy, peace, and love while others desperately long for the same. Some will experience a time of family gatherings, festive meals, renewing friendships, and the reunion of relationships, while others experience empty baskets and empty chairs, separation, brokenness, and loneliness. Isolation and separation have marked the past year. Pandemic quarantine has brought about a nagging sense of loneliness and disconnection. However, isolation and loneliness are not modern-day problems. They are as old as human relationships and they are by-products of a much deeper issue than a pandemic...they are rooted in sin. When Adam and Eve rebelled against God, their first inclination was to hide. Simply put, sin separates. But separation was never God''s intent. The story of Scripture begins and ends with the presence of God. God''s desire and His design is to dwell with His people. In the book of Genesis, Eden is the first couple''s home but, more importantly, it is God''s sanctuary--the garden temple where the Creator and his image-bearers relate (Gen 3:8). However, their disobedience cut them off from God, Who is the very source of life. Death entered. And so, people felt the ache of separation. They felt a longing to be in His Presence. They experienced a sense of exile. And that''s where Jesus steps into history and therein lies the hope of His Arrival! His Presence equals hope! This sentiment was captured in the Christmas Carol, O'' Holy Night... Long lay the world in sin and error, pining, ''Til He appeared and the soul felt it''s worth A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn''! Emmanuel, also called the Christ, changed the world. At that moment when God became flesh, humanity watched prophecies unfold as hope was born. Jesus, our Emmanuel, provided hope that sin and death wouldn''t always win and mankind wouldn''t always feel so painfully alone. Join other believers in a 41-day journey of anticipation of God''s presence!

Each Gospel, in its own way, leads us on the Advent journey of preparation for Christ’s coming. This book takes a tour through the four Gospel narratives that announce Christ’s birth or make way for his ministry. Readers will discover what parts of the Christmas story come from which Gospel, recognizing an invitation from each Gospel writer to prepare for a fresh experience of Christ in the past and the future. This thematic Bible study is designed to be used by individuals and small groups during Advent. In addition to the main content, each chapter offers questions for reflection and discussion, a brief prayer, and a focus for the week. The weekly focus emerges from the chapter content and encourages the readers to engage a spiritual practice or do something specific that will help them grow in faith. The thematic seasonal Bible study series is designed for transformation and for applying the study of the Bible to everyday, practical life experience. It is intended to nurture and encourage faith development and spiritual growth during the season of Advent.
