While The Music Lasts written by Alice McVeigh and has been published by Warleigh Hall Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-01-10 with Fiction categories.

A novel by Alice McVeigh (Second edition) “This portrayal of the psychosexual duet between men and women, and of the music-making process in a symphony orchestra, sings with lyrical intensity and eloquent feeling” (Publishers Weekly) Life in the (fictional) Orchestra of London as seen through the eyes of several musicians. Perfectly representing the disparate attitudes, passions and ambitions of a London orchestra full of vital characters, it features love affairs, musical rivalries, world tour disasters and a highly unusual codicil to a will. Originally "big-five"-published, this is based upon McVeigh’s experiences as a cellist, when she performed all over the world with orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic. "The orchestra becomes a universe in microcosm - all human life is here" (The Sunday Times) "A very enjoyable novel - and not quite as light as it pretends to be." (The Sunday Telegraph)

At a time when women were thought to succeed only in composing drawing-room songs or light-weight piano pieces, Alice Mary Smith (1839-1884) wrote by far the greatest number of larger-scale art works of any British woman composer in the nineteenth century. She was most probably the first woman to have written OCo and had performed OCo a symphony, composed in 1863 at the age of twenty-four. Two of her six concert overtures were regularly performed by distinguished conductors of the time, and her four cantatas for choir and orchestra achieved some popularity in the last years of her short life. This study also briefly outlines the work of five other women composers of her time who attempted the higher forms of the art, and examines, from contemporary sources, the argument, current at the time, as to whether a woman could ever compose a OCygreatOCO work."

The American Symphony written by Neil Butterworth and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-23 with Music categories.

First published in 1998, this volume is the first book to focus on the American symphony. Neil Butterworth surveys the development of the symphony in the United States from early European influences in the last century to the present day, and asks why American composers have shown such allegiance to a musical form which their European contemporaries appear to have discarded. An overview of the growth of musical societies in America during the eighteenth century and the establishment of the first professional orchestras during the early part of the nineteenth century is followed by chronological analyses of the works of those composers who have played important parts in the progress of symphony in the United States, from Charles Ives, Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein, to contemporary figures such as William Bolcom and John Harbison. Complete with a comprehensive catalogue of symphonies and an extensive discography, this book is an indispensable reference work.
