A bowl of soup sparked the origins for this book. The idea started one day with a seemingly innocent question asked at lunch. We were having Campbell's Alphabet Soup (Vegetarian Vegetable). Sometimes a game is played while having the soup. You must come up with a name for each alphabet letter you see in your spoonful. Well the letter 'X' appeared in a spoonful and the question arose: "Are there any old ship names that begin with the letter 'X'?" Surveying the Lloyd's Shipping Registry and newspaper archives there were some ships names that began with the letter 'X'. Granted the number of ships listed each year with a 'X' name was quite minimal. Sometimes there were only one or two. A few times there might be five or six. At the very most there might be ten or so, but compared to other letters of the alphabet the number of ships with 'X' names was insignificant. Of course, once established that there were some ship names beginning with the letter 'X', the question arose: "Did any of these ships have interesting stories?" As a matter of fact, there were a number of interesting stories about ships with names beginning with the letter 'X'. The basis of these ship stories are actual reported events in 18th - 19th century newspapers. In this book there are sea yarns about the following ship names that begin with the letter 'X': Xanthe, XYZ, XL, Xanthus, Xulla, XV de Marzo, Xema, Xarifas, Xenophon, Xenia, Xerxes, Xantippe, Xiphias, Xerezano, and Xantho.
