This study sought to increase understanding of student and administrator perceptions of student protests. Much has been written about the actions taken by students in forms of protest at Universities. Likewise there have been numerous looks at the various ways in which university administrators have responded to these protests. However, little research has been done to compare and contrast the perceptions of students and administrators as to what constitutes effective responses when protests are initiated, nor has much literature appeared on what both students and administrators see as the goals of student protests. More specifically, the purpose of this study was to understand three things. The first question was 1) what are student protesters', at three University of California campuses, definition of effective administrator responses to student protests? What actions and behaviors do students note as effective and ineffective? The second question was 2) what are selected key administrators' at three University of California campuses, perceptions of effective responses and goals to student protests? What lessons have administrators learned with regard to their part in responding to student protests? The final question was 3) how are student protesters' and key administrators' perceptions of effective responses to student protest the same or different? Student activists and upper level administrators at three University of California schools were interviewed. Data were collected utilizing qualitative methodology, specifically semi-structured interviews. Eight administrators and 15 student activists total were interviewed. Efforts were made to identify key administrators on each campus who were charged with responding to student protests. Likewise, students who participated in one or more of these protests were interviewed on each campus to gather their perceptions. Results included a number of key findings. Both students and administrators felt that communication, listening, and safety were key components to effective responses to protests. Although both groups agreed these were important components, their definitions and perceptions of the degree of each other's priorities varied. Administrators felt they were communicating, listening and maintaining safety. However often student activists did not agree. Students desired more transparency from administrators in order to understand how they could contribute to making change within their institution. Administrators were concerned about the continuity of campus operations during protests, a concern that was not a primary priority of the students. Some of the tools administrators utilized while working with student protesters were relationship building, knowledge of student development theory, trust, and patience. Students felt administrators needed more diversity training and understanding of students' experiences, as well as conflict mediation skills. Students felt these skills would enhance the interactions they had with administrators. By further understanding each other's perceptions and definitions of effectiveness, it is hoped that the results of this study will inform both students and administrators so that protests and other forms of student speech and communication can be part of the effective dialog of a vibrant university. The study includes recommendations for contributing to this greater understanding.

This study investigated the effects that peer mediation/conflict resolution training has on the behavior, attitudes and problem solving strategies of sixth grade urban students. The participants were randomly drawn from the middle school population of the City of York, Pennsylvania. An experimental pretest post-test design was used to conduct the investigation. Information used to measure the dependent variables was gathered from a Likert scale questionnaire and from district discipline records. The data were analyzed using an analysis of variance and chi square procedure. The effect of peer mediation/conflict resolution training on behavior was significant. The control group had more incidents of anti-social behavior than the experimental group. Additionally, a significant effect was found regarding attitudes. The experimental group was found to demonstrate more pro-social attitudes than the control group. Training also had a significant effect on problem solving skills. The experimental group scores indicated greater use of pro-social behavioral skills in solving conflicts than the control group. Results from the data provide information that can enable administrators to address discipline concerns arising from naturally occurring conflict. -- Abstract.
