This thesis is a study of student concerts by professional symphony orchestras; the preparation for the concerts in selected cities of the United States; the listing of all available selections presented in thirteen cities from 1959-64; and the follow-up practices in the selected cities. Information concerning the need for symphonic concerts was gained by interviews with parents and teachers and review of concert music in two schools in Kansas City, Missouri. Information concerning concert practices was obtained through questionnaires sent to thirty supervisors of music, with eighteen respondees. Information concerning concert repertoire was found in manuals containing procedures and program notes. The study of pre-concert preparation showed that 1) the program notes are adequate, 2) grade school students have more preparation for the concerts than secondary students, 3) preparation of high school students is very limited, except for those pupils in music classes. A study of follow-up procedures showed that when it is left to the individual teachers, very little is done to keep the concert music alive. Repetition of the concerts on school-owned radios assures the rehearing of the music in three cities. One city has a request program each year. The concert charge to students was found to be nominal in all cases, since school concerts are presented as a service, not as a source of income. From this study it is obvious that the actual cost of the concerts and the time invested by the orchestra is in no way equaled by the preparation and follow-up procedures. It was found that opportunities to attend the live concert most often begin with the fourth grade. High school students have less opportunity to attend concerts than elementary or junior high students. The percentage of attendance from any given student body varies, depending upon the financial resources of the orchestra and the cooperation of administrators in releasing students from classes. Certain developments are being accepted to an increasing degree, such as 1) concerts in high school buildings, 2) season tickets, 3) audience singing, 4) all-city student orchestra performances with the symphony orchestra. Individual practices of merit were also reported, such as 1) a display of paintings related to the concert music, 2) an annual request program, 3) a free presentation of the concert for parents in the evening, 4) aid in the preparation by volunteers from the Junior League and the Symphony Women's Committee, and 5) a yearly music memory contest. Interesting and well-planned programs are presented in all cities. With few exceptions, they are suitable for the age group that hears them. The live concerts are unanimously considered whorthwhile by school music supervisors.

Masterworks Of The Orchestral Repertoire written by Donald N. Ferguson and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1968-03-04 with Music categories.

Masterworks of the Orchestral Repertoire was first published in 1968. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. The fullest enjoyment of an orchestral performance or a record concert comes with a background of knowledge about the music itself. This handbook is designed to help music lovers get the ultimate pleasure from their listening by providing them with that background about a large portion of the orchestral repertoire. Professor Ferguson analyzes and interprets the most important classical symphonies, overtures, and concertos, as well as selected orchestral works of modern composers. He goes beyond a conventional analysis of structure since he believes (with a majority of the music-loving public) that great music is actually a communication -- that it expresses significant emotions. The great composers, on their own testimony, have striven not merely to create perfect forms but to interpret human experience. Mingled with the analyses, then, the reader will find comments on the expressive purport of the music. For twenty-five years Professor Ferguson has supplied the program notes for the subscription concerts of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, and this volume is an outgrowth of that activity. In preparing the material for book publication, however, he studied the musical compositions anew, and the resulting chapters provide a much deeper exploration of the musical subjects than did the program notes. The themes of important works are illustrated by musical notations, and a brief glossary explains technical terms.

Schoenberg S Program Notes And Musical Analyses written by Arnold Schoenberg and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Music categories.

In 1950, as Arnold Schoenberg anticipated the publication of a collection of 15 of his most important writings, Style and Idea, he was already at work on a second volume to be called Program Notes. Inspired by this idea, Schoenberg's Program Notes and Musical Analyses can boast the most comprehensive study of the composer's writings about his own music yet published. Schoenberg's insights emerge not only in traditional program notes, but also in letters, sketch materials, pre-concert talks, public lectures, contributions to scholarly journals, newspaper articles, interviews, pedagogical materials, and publicity fliers. The editions of the texts in this collection, based almost exclusively on Schoenberg's original manuscript sources, include many items appearing in print in English for the first time, as well as more familiar texts that preserve musical and textual information eliminated from previous editions. The book also reveals how Schoenberg, desirous to communicate with and educate an audience, took every advantage of changes in technology during his lifetime, utilizing print media, radio broadcasts, record jackets--and had he lived, television--for this purpose. In addition to four chapters in which Schoenberg illuminates 42 of his own compositions, the book begins with chapters on his development and influences, his thoughts about trends in modern music, and, in a nod to the importance of the radio in providing a venue for music analysis, a chapter about Schoenberg's radio broadcasts.
