Acclaimed medical historian Howard Markel traces the careers of two brilliant young doctors—Sigmund Freud, neurologist, and William Halsted, surgeon—showing how their powerful addictions to cocaine shaped their enormous contributions to psychology and medicine. When Freud and Halsted began their experiments with cocaine in the 1880s, neither they, nor their colleagues, had any idea of the drug's potential to dominate and endanger their lives. An Anatomy of Addiction tells the tragic and heroic story of each man, accidentally struck down in his prime by an insidious malady: tragic because of the time, relationships, and health cocaine forced each to squander; heroic in the intense battle each man waged to overcome his affliction. Markel writes of the physical and emotional damage caused by the then-heralded wonder drug, and how each man ultimately changed the world in spite of it—or because of it. One became the father of psychoanalysis; the other, of modern surgery. Here is the full story, long overlooked, told in its rich historical context.

The spectrum of addiction disorders presents practitioners with numerous challenges—among them the widening gap between a growing evidence base and the translation of this knowledge into treatment outcomes. Addiction Medicine addresses this disconnect, clearly explaining the role of brain function in drug taking and other habit-forming behaviors, and applying this biobehavioral framework to the delivery of evidence-based treatment. Its state-of-the-art coverage provides clinically relevant details on not only traditional sources of addiction such as cocaine, opiates, and alcohol, but also more recently recognized substances of abuse (e.g., steroids, inhalants) as well as behavioral addictions (e.g., binge eating, compulsive gambling, hoarding). Current behavioral and medical therapies are discussed in depth, and the book’s close attention to social context gives readers an added lens for personalizing treatment. An international panel of expert contributors offers the most up-to-date information on: Diagnosis and classification Neurobiological and molecular theories of addiction Behavioral concepts of addiction Clinical aspects of addiction to a wide range of substances, including opiates, stimulants, sedatives, hallucinogens, alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine Science-based treatment options: pharmacotherapy, pharmacogenetics, potential vaccines, brief and compliance-enhancing interventions, cognitive behavioral treatment, behavioral management, and other psychosocial interventions Behavioral addictions—including compulsive eating, Internet messaging, and hypersexuality—and their treatment Addiction in specific populations, including adolescents, the elderly, pregnant women, and health care professionals Legal, disability, and rehabilitation issues At once comprehensive and integrative, Addiction Medicine is an essential text and a practice-expanding tool for psychiatrists, health psychologists, pharmacologists, social workers, drug counselors, trainees, and general physicians/family practitioners.

The Neurobiology Of Addiction written by Trevor W. Robbins and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Medical categories.

In the past two decades, there have been astonishing advances in our understanding of the neurobiological basis and nature of drug addiction. We now know the initial molecular sites of action, at identified receptors, of virtually all of the major drugs of abuse including cocaine, heroin, and amphetamine, as well as legal drugs such as nicotine and alcohol. We also understand the main components of a 'reward system' and its connections to major brain regions involved in motivation and emotion, such as the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex. The Neurobiology of Addiction describes the latest advances in our understanding of addiction. It brings together world class researchers to debate the nature and extent of addiction, as well as its causes, consequences, and treatment. The focus of the book is on the brain processes underlying addiction, in terms of neural systems, neurochemical basis, and molecular changes. Several types of addiction are discussed ranging from illicit drugs - cocaine, amphetamine, and heroin to legal drugs - alcohol and nicotine. In addition, it explores increasingly common behavioural addictions such as gambling and obesity. Included are chapters on vulnerability to addiction, genetic factors, opponent motivational processes, animal models, relapse, cognitive deficits associated with drug abuse, new pharmacological treatments, and current controversies concerning different neuropsychological theories of addiction. Throughout, it reports on cutting edge research using brain imaging, and state of the art molecular methodology. The book will make fascinating reading for students and teachers in the field of neuroscience, pharmacology and psychology, as well as experts in the field.

The relapse rate for addicts in conventional treatment programs is a shocking 70-90%, despite the best efforts of family members, doctors, and the addicts themselves. Drawing on the latest addiction research, Creative Care founders Morteza and Karen Khaleghi argue that the reason so many addicts fail to make headway is because, too often, they focus on the addiction only, and not the many factors that contribute to it. Readers will learn how to: * recognize what people and situations drive their addiction * peel back the layers of their life to understand the roots of helplessness and dependency * rewrite family dynamics and end the cycle of addiction. This is an eye-opening look for addicts and family members that will show them how to discover the heart of problem, and overcome it.

This book is about my life. I was born on August 1, 1948 in Seattle, Washington, at Puget Sound Hospital. I ask myself why anybody would want to read a book about me, but it's not necessarily a book about me. I am hoping that this book will help people that have made a lot of mistakes in their lives understand a little bit more about the process of life and how we can make sense out of some of the mistakes that we've made or just be more at peace with the life that we've lived. I remember coming to earth. I know that sounds crazy. I thought it was a little crazy, but you know, I do remember. And I cannot deny it! I've really never met in person anyone that has remembered coming to earth. Then a few years ago I got a hold of a book written by Wayne Dyer, and he was the only other person I ever heard that had also remembered coming to earth. God has always seemed so real to me I just felt like I knew him. When I came here, I was waiting in a long line, and it came to be my turn. I was so excited because there were a lot of people or a lot of spirits waiting, and it was my turn! It was very special in the spiritual realm to have the privilege to be wrapped in an earthly body to come to earth! Even if the body was crippled or maimed, somehow it was still a huge privilege! I was so excited about coming I said, "Oh, Lord, send me to the worst family you have, and I'll tell them all about you. I'll tell them how much you love them. I know as soon as I tell them how much you mean, how wonderful you are, and what a great Lord you are, they will love you just like I do! Oh, please send me. I will not lose my way, I promise!" He said, "Oh, believe me you will lose your way. Everyone does, but I promise you this: you will always find your way home." Well, the next thing I knew I was here. I had no idea what was in store for me! I had made contracts with certain people, and now I had to live up to those contracts. I was here on earth all right, and I was in a real cozy family. The journey had begun.

One out of ten families deal with addiction to drugs or alcohol. The number of young men and women dying from addiction has grown over the years and is still growing today. Addiction impacts not only the addict but also the addict's family. For every addict there is a father and mother who are bearing the hurt of watching a child descend into the darkness of drug or alcohol dependency. Though others often give up hope, these mothers and fathers are desperate to believe there is a door to freedom. In addition to parents, there also are wives and children abandoned because the father is incarcerated for a drug-related crime. Charles' story tells us there is hope that comes from God and that this hope will not disappoint us. His story tells us that when we come to a spiritual awakening and receive the counsel and help that creates new thinking and emotional healing, a new story can be written for us, and a new life can spring from the wreckage of failure and become a part of the solution for others walking that same path.
