Henry Gerber was the father of American gay liberation. Born in 1892 in Germany, Henry Gerber was expelled from school as a boy and lost several jobs as a young man because of his homosexual activities. He emigrated to the United States and enlisted in the army for employment. After his release, he explored Chicago's gay subculture: cruising Bughouse Square, getting arrested for "disorderly conduct," and falling in love. He was institutionalized for being gay, branded an "enemy alien" at the end of World War I, and given a choice: to rejoin the army or be imprisoned in a federal penitentiary. Gerber re-enlisted and was sent to Germany in 1920. In Berlin, he discovered a vibrant gay rights movement, which made him vow to advocate for the rights of gay men at home. He founded the Society for Human Rights, the first legally recognized US gay-rights organization, on December 10, 1924. When police caught wind of it, he and two members were arrested. He lost his job, went to court three times, and went bankrupt. Released, he moved to New York, disheartened. Later in life, he joined the DC chapter of the Mattachine Society, a gay-rights advocacy group founded by Harry Hay who had heard of Gerber's group, leading him to found Mattachine. An Angel in Sodom is the first and long overdue biography of the founder of the first US gay rights organization.

Angel stories from the Bible — for kids

Modern believers may be tempted to look upon angels as one of the more fanciful elements of Scripture, but this illuminating and entertaining collection of angel stories from the Bible shows that there are just too many angels for them to be metaphorical, allegorical, or unimportant.

So that children will come to know and learn to revere angels, Marigold Hunt explains what angels are (and are not!) and gathers here in one volume most of the stories of angels in the Bible, including exciting tales of:

  • The fallen angels, beginning with the devil himself, tempting Adam and Eve
  • The angel who barred the gates of Eden so Adam and Eve could never enter again
  • The angels who announced that Sara, Abraham’s aged wife, would have a baby
  • The angels who tried to save Lot from destruction with the city of Sodom
  • The angel who stayed Abraham’s hand as he was about to sacrifice his son Isaac
  • The angels in Jacob’s dream who climbed the stairway to Heaven
  • The angels who saved Sidrach, Misach, and Abdenago from the fiery furnace
  • The angel Raphael, who shielded Tobias from death, and protected his wife Sara
  • The angels at the Ascension who chided the apostles for staring at the sky
  • The angel Gabriel, who foretold the birth of Jesus and John the Baptist
  • The choirs of angels who sang above Bethlehem when Jesus was born
  • The angel who carried food to Daniel when he was imprisoned in the lion’s den
  • The angel who freed Peter from prison, and, of course:
  • The countless angels who fill the marvelous pages of the Book of Revelation
  • Children will be charmed by these exciting tales.

'Arditti is a master storyteller who uses his theological literacy sparingly to deliver a challenging but enthralling read' Guardian Award-winning, bestselling author Michael Arditti's tenth novel, documenting the history of homophobia and religion. God's vengeance on the wicked city of Sodom is a perennial source of fascination and horror. Michael Arditti's passionate and enthralling new novel explores the enduring power of the myth in five momentous epochs. A young Judean exile transcribes the Acts of Abraham and Lot in ancient Babylon; the Guild of Salters presents a mystery play of Lot's Wife in medieval York; Botticelli paints the Destruction of Sodom for a court in Renaissance Florence; a bereaved rector searches for the Cities of the Plain in nineteenth century Palestine; a closeted gay movie star portrays Lot in a controversial biblical epic in 1980s Hollywood. With its interrelated narratives and interwoven documents, Of Men and Angels is both formally inventive and imaginatively rich. Abounding in characters as vivid as they are varied, from temple prostitutes and palace eunuchs, through fanatical friars and humanist poets, to Bedouin tribesmen, Russian exiles and, of course, angels, this is a novel of breathtaking scope, penetrating insight and profound human sympathy.

This volume is devoted to the receptions of and reflections on the story of Sodom and Gomorrah as told in Genesis 18 and 19. Two articles discuss intertextual reactions to the Sodom narrative within the Hebrew Bible. Five contributions examine readings and rewritings of the Sodom narrative in early Jewish, Christian and Islamic writings: Jubilees, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the New Testament (Revelation 11), Targumim and early Koran commentaries. Two articles focus on separate themes, the punishment of the Dead Sea and the prohibition on looking back. Finally, two articles that focus on Peter Damian and Proust's Sodome et Gomorrhe I describe the later reception of the sin of Sodom as homosexuality. A bibliography of recent works completes the volume.

In Sodoms ThresholdThe Desire for the Unthinkable, author Dr. Isaac B. Rosler deconstructs the narrative of Sodom and highlights how religion borrows its fervor and passion from a nonreligious impetus that is not only other than religion but also other than God. He invites us to trespassto think about what has already trespassed our senses and to make sense of an overabundant excess that remains unsacrificable even through ruins, ashes, and forgetfulness. Sodoms Threshold explores concepts of alterity and otherness, and it calls us to think about a space of passion that keeps returning in spite of interruptionsin spite of religious, family, or state mandates that command us not to touch an alterity that has already arrived and is in excess of every touch. The Sodomites forbidden passion is an excess that impassionsit is a surplus that will be usurped and neutralized ad infi nitum by the multiple religions that both rise against its mystery and yet are also founded by it. Though Sodom was erased, its alterity and its surplus are indestructible.
