Excerpt from An Annotated Bibliography on Detached Breakwaters and Artificial Headlands In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the potential use of detached breakwaters for shore stabilization. However, lack of design experience with these structures has hindered their widespread application in beach erosion projects. Engineers are often uncertain about how to approach the design problem because of the many unknowns involved. In addition, there are few existing structures that can be studied to provide prototype data. This annotated bibliography is presented to assist in the develop ment of reliable design procedures for detached breakwaters. The refer onces deal with topics which can be usefully applied to the design problem although many are not limited solely to the subject of detached break waters. For instance, the wave dissipation characteristics of submerged breakwaters are discussed in several papers. An understanding of these characteristics would be necessary for the design of some detached break waters. Papers on wave diffraction, reflection, transmission, and over topping are also included. The bibliography is not comprehensive in these areas but an attempt has been made to identify some significant works with potential applications. Several papers describe the use of detached breakwaters as sand traps for navigation projects. Although this use does not fall within the realm of shore protection, these structures do affect the coastal pro cesses in the same way as shore protection breakwaters. Coastal Hazards written by Charles W. Finkl and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-11 with Nature categories.

This book covers the gamut of coastal hazards that result from short-term low-frequency events and have high-magnitude and far-reaching impacts on coastal zones the world over. Much of the world’s population now lives in low-lying coastal zones that are inherently vulnerable to natural hazards such as flooding from hurricanes, tropical storms and northeastern storm surges; shoreline (beach and dune) erosion; cliff and bluff failures; and saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers used for drinking water supplies. In addition to the usual range of hydrometeorological disasters in coastal zones, this book covers tsunami impacts and warning systems as well as global perspectives of sea-level rise impacts and human perceptions of potential vulnerabilities resulting from rip currents that cause many drownings each year on beaches. Today, the use of numerical models that help predict vulnerabilities and provide a basis for shore protection measures is important in modern scientific and engineering systems. Final considerations focus on human actions in the form of the urbanization and industrialization of the coast, shore protection measures, and indicate how environmental degradation around coastal conurbations exacerbates the potential for unwanted impacts. Strategies for environmental management in coastal zones, from low-lying wetlands to high cliffs and rocky promontories, are highlighted as a means of living in harmony with Nature and not trying to conquer it.

The Spanish Coastal Systems written by Juan A. Morales and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-03 with Science categories.

This monograph presents the state of art of the geologic knowledge about the Spanish coast obtained through scientific research in the last 30 years. From a general point of view, coasts are the most quickly changing systems of the Earth. This is critical, since many human resources, such as the main part of economic and social activities, are located in the coastal areas. Especially in the case of Spain these coasts include cities, wide industrial areas (including harbor complexes), important ecologic systems, and our main economic resource: tourism. Understanding the dynamic functioning of each element of this coast is vital for correct future coastal management, so as to solve problems derived from bad plans developed in the last decades of the twentieth century. This is a valuable text for advanced graduate students and coastal researchers, which connects the specific dynamic functioning of the main Spanish coastal environments and their relationships with human activities.

This book deals with the physical aspects of the sea as exemplified by the Pacific Ocean and the contiguous waters of the British Columbia coast. Although principally devoted to waves, currents and tides, the book spans a broad spectrum of topics ranging from meteorology and marine biology to past and present marine geology. It attempts to elucidate the nature of oceanic motions and to relate them to everyday experience for the general interest of the casual reader and for the practical benefit of the professional mariner, scientist, or engineer.
