Excerpt from Christianity in India: An Historical Narrative It will be observed that the subject has been treated biographically in the earlier part of the work. I believe that this mode of treatment, whilst impart ing a living interest to the narrative better calculated than anything else to enchain the attention of the reader, is at the same time the most truthful form in which the progress of Christianity in India can be represented. It is to the advance of individual minds - to the energy of individual efforts - that we owe the much or the little that has been done; and it is in the thoughts that were taking shape in the minds Of these pioneers Of the Gospel that we must trace the dawning of Christianity in the East. The first difficulties fairly overcome-the thicket cleared. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Andrew Fuller (1754–1815) was a pastor whose ministry coincided with the revitalization of the English Calvinistic Baptist denomination of which he was a distinguished member. He was a pathbreaking theologian, apologist, and spiritual biographer, who throughout his career remained rooted in the local church. Yet despite his multiple achievements, Fuller was probably best known at the end of his life as a pioneering missionary statesman. He was one of the founders and principal advocates of the Baptist Missionary Society, serving as the new society’s secretary from its inception in 1792 until his death. His Apology for the Late Christian Missions to India was published in 1808 to defend the BMS missionaries from those who wanted them recalled from ‘British India’ for damaging colonial interests. In the Apology, Fuller shares his passion for overseas cross-cultural mission, a passion which came to define his ministry for many of his contemporaries and also, to a significant degree, for subsequent generations. In the Apology Fuller advocates on their behalf. This new edition of the Apology includes a 30,000-word introduction setting the context, and full notes on the text itself. It is of interest to theologians and missiologists as well as specialists in the history of Christian cross-cultural mission, colonialism, and the intersection between the two.

Excerpt from India and Christian Missions In preparing these pages for the press, I intended neither to write a large nor an elaborate book. In pleading the cause of Missions in various parts of England, I was struck with the large number of persons who felt greatly interested in the progress of Christianity in India, who knew comparatively little, in a definite form, of the country as a field for missions, yet who were quite prepared eagerly to accept of all the information that could be given them. It is for such that this volume is designed. It has been my aim, in conjunction with this leading missionary purpose, to give as much information as possible - without seriously digressing from the subject in hand - respecting the character, and the social as well as religious state of the people of India. Christians form the third largest religious community in India. How has this come about? There are many studies of separate groups: but there has so far been no major history of the three large groups - Roman Catholic, Protestant and Thomas Christians (Syrians). This work attempts to meet the need for such a history. It goes right back to the beginning and traces the story through the ups and downs of at least fifteen centuries. It includes careful studies of the political and social background and of the non-Christian reactions to the Christian message. The narration is non-technical and should present few difficulties to the thoughtful reader; the more technical matters are dealt with in notes and appendices. This book will be of interest to all students of Church History and will also prove fascinating to many who are concerned with the development of Christianity as a world religion and in the dialogue between different forms of faith.
