Excerpt from An Approach to Business Problems Before a science of business can take shape, there must first be build up a system of business practice. The methods, plans, and rules of the most efficient organizations must be brought together, tested, and compared, and the most effective must be selected and coordinated. Some of this work has been done. Trade associations, universities, periodicals, and various governmental agencies have been studying the details of production and distribution. But up to the present, no plan for the guidance of the student in the maze of business practice has been offered. To supply this deficiency, to discover a classification molded on the living activities of business, to supply a uniform method of approach to business problems in whatever form they may arise, and to illustrate the application of this method to typical problems, including those involving the relations of business to - society these are the purposes of this book. I need hardly say that in all this the book makes no claim to finality. If the classification and the uniform method should do no more than suggest improvements upon themselves, the work, I feel, would have been worth while. But I venture to hope also that they will be of some practical value in their present form: that they will make it easier for business men and all thinking men to see each activity of business in its relations to others and to visualize and weigh all the significant factors bearing on any business problem. The subject of Marketing, as a field of scientific study and instruction, is in its early stages of development. Consequently, the treatment of topics taken up in this book is far from perfect. This is to be considered a preliminary stage in the systematic development of the subject by the problem method of instruction. Further study and experience will doubt less show many opportunities for improvement and refinement. The problems are selected to illustrate specific points, to be developed by analysis and discussion. Although frequently the identity of the individual com pany or establishment is disguised, the cases are based upon actual business experience. The problems are in the form in which they come before business men. I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to my former colleague, Mr. Paul T. Excerpt from Business Arithmetic The text has been addressed to the pupil, such approach being made as will make the subject of Arithmetic interesting. Problems have been selected that grow out of the everyday activities of school, home, society and business. Special care has been given to methods. The authors' aim has been to climi nate all unnecessary figures and thus save both time and labor. Where more than one method could be used, the figures have been shown side by side for comparison and discussion. Im portant features have been emphasized, those less' important treated briefly, and all matter considered of very little use to the business man has been eliminated. Abundant drills in prac tical business problems are given so that the pupil may acquire skill and accuracy in making the detailed calculations of a busi ness office. Machines are often used for the detail work, but since the machines are not always available, the pupil should be taught to handle figures rapidly. It is a known fact that a person who handles figures well can operate a machine with more ease and rapidity. Emphasis is placed on the relation of numbers, as shown in common and decimal fractions and in percentage, special care being taken to show the interrelation of these three studies. Mental work is emphasized throughout. Many oral exercises are given preceding, and in conjunction with, written drills. The subjects of Percentage, Profit and Loss, Interest, Stocks and Bonds, Investments, etc., are approached from the stand point of accounting, business administration, and economics. This is an effort to properly correlate Arithmetic with these subjects. Authorities on these subjects were consulted freely.
